I think the reason the Packers are getting a lot of shrugs in the post-draft evaluations is they didn't draft anyone's guy. They didn't take anyone that had the draft analysts foaming at the mouth to say "THIS IS MY GUY."

Just to give you an idea of the kind of talent Domani Jackson has, he was 16th in @mcshay13.bsky.social's Way Too Early Mock Draft this time last year. He didn't take the step forward that was expected, but he was a 5-star recruit who went to USC/Bama for a reason.

Was just cleaning up my draft doc and saw J. Michael Sturdivant was 241 on the consensus board I was using. That's squarely a draftable grade. A slew of WRs were drafted who did NOT have draftable grades by consensus. 9.96 RAS. Traded away 7ths but got 7th round talent.

Thought the NFC North overall did a very good job adding talent at key positions. I like a LOT of players all four teams drafted. That said, the Packers did the best job of finding value relative to consensus and prioritizing elite athletes. We’ll see who is good.

The last time the Packers had a needs-based draft like this was 2021 when they reached for Stokes, picked Myers over Humphrey and traded up for Amari Rodgers. This draft is needs-based while also getting GREAT value.

So I went back and watched the games I'd evaluated with Cisse, and I thought he was rotating out of the game. He was actually playing some safety at times. Really versatile player.

Gutekunst said he didn't think the CB board was as strong as the DT board, where they were going to be picking. This was something we talked about all pre-draft: There was a CLEAR tier break after Cisse with the CBs, and he fell into their lap.

Great exchange last night where a reporter told Brian Gutekunst he felt like sometimes at pre-draft press conferences the "whole truth" isn't being shared. Gutekunst interrupted and said, "You guys lie to me?" with a wry smile.

Gutekunst confirmed transferring is "100%" part of the evaluation now. Said the "why" is important as well as how they adapt. Pointed out he liked that Cisse went from the ACC to SEC.

Gutekunst pointed out both Cisse and McClellan are transfer guys and adapted to their new situations quickly. This is something you hear from people in the league with NIL/transfer portal. There are obvious cons, but learning to adapt quickly is a pro.

All pre-draft I insisted the Packers had to take a DT with pass rush upside if they were going to take one in the top 100. Gutekunst was adamant that McClellan's pass rush upside was the differentiator for them. Good process.

Brian Gutekunst said there was a group of players at 52 they really liked then suggested Chris McClellan was one of them. They drafted a guy they probably thought wouldn't be there at 52, then got a guy they would have taken at 52 at 77. Good business for them.

Not having a first-round pick makes it a bit easier, but this is the first Packers draft I can remember where there wasn’t a real obvious blinking light player GB passed on to take their guy. Cisse went later than expected and DT was a huge need position.
