Problem is that a lot of people Varne looks up to have some manner of tragedy attached to them. They were either killed (Haurchi, Ysale), betrayed and killed (Minfilia), killed and then trapped inside a Primal (Hyth), committed suicide (Ardbert, Azem). So...idolising kinda feels wrong.

Varne sucks at being the warrior of light. She sucks because she's supposed to be cool, stalwart and always hopeful, even when she kills a lot of people, but she's hurting and feels guilty for many things she's done. So she sucks, and she technically quitted the job. And now she's better.
