Sadly animation is way too expensive and is still near impossible to just fund it with the animation itself, merch is still far too important to these project to exist.

And I think there is a difference between merch for a group to fund a project and a megacorp using dark patterns to make people over consume.

I get the irony of KoG being a critical take on Disney while also advertising it’s own merch- but Disney is a mass conglomerate corporation who has been around for years and is well known to the majority of the population-
