This Advocacy Day, OCUFA continues to share critical issues facing our sector. Despite the government’s 2019 decision to cap and freeze domestic tuition, Ontario domestic undergraduates still pay rates of tuition well above the Canadian average with higher levels of debt.

Ontario’s economy is under threat from American tariffs and automation-induced job losses. Despite all university programs providing skills that employers need, only a narrow range of programs are receiving additional financial support from government.

OCUFA is sharing concerns and demanding Ontario MPPs commit to supporting sustainable funding for our vital sector. More students than ever before want an Ontario university education.

Today, OCUFA is meeting with Ontario MPPs to discuss the serious threats facing our education sector. Ontario provides its universities with the lowest amount of total provincial funding per-domestic full-time equivalent (FTE) student in Canada, and it’s not close.

OCUFA is committed to enhancing the quality of higher public education in Ontario and recognizing the outstanding contributions of our members towards creating a world-class university system. An important part of that work is effective advocacy.

OCUFA continues to be deeply concerned that Ontario’s universities are currently grappling with program closures, enrollment pauses, increasing precarity among faculty, and significant challenges in funding the province’s most promising talent.

Under Bill 33, the Ontario government could strip students of that power, threatening vital campus services and democratic decision-making.

Higher education in Ontario is at a crossroads. This current government ignores the real problems. They offer stopgap measures. Not real solutions. Underfunding is a significant threat. It starves research. It weakens teaching. It's impacting student access and success.

🚨 Emilda Thaveratnam's recent op-ed in @theconversation.com provides valuable context about the founding vision for post-secondary education in Ontario, as well as the serious threats this vital sector is facing.

Our universities are in crisis—underfunded, undervalued, and pushed to the breaking point. The ongoing austerity measures are stifling research productivity and innovation, causing direct and indirect job losses, and downgrading Ontario’s competitiveness and reputation.

The financial struggles plaguing our postsecondary education sector are not a sudden development, nor are they solely a result of federal changes to international student permit caps.

Today OCUFA was proud to stand in solidarity with @opseusefpo.bsky.social support staff members on strike. This is about more than a fair contract—it’s about the future of public education in Ontario.

OCUFA knows that universities take their institutional governance seriously and work to disseminate leading practices. Nevertheless, improvements are always possible.
