I’ve been thinking about this a lot as we enter into this “nation-building” phase of Canada’s civic life. “Nation-building” is essentially code for staples development, which has its place, but did not “make” Canada. This iteration seems like it will really just enrich the already wealthy. #cdnpoli

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes. The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last. The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes. Why? It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

I do not understand how we got to a place where we collectively shrug about the fact that we have created a world where #ClimateChange will devastate many of our lives, especially our children’s. Instead of taking action, our political leaders have decided doing nothing is best.

Here's the biggest PSE story you haven't heard yet: the Canada Student Grant for low-income students is being cut from $4200/year to $3000/year as of next August. It's implicit in the budget tables but the government is too chickenshit to actually say so directly.

We should all be doing something that we can name to reverse course on #climatechange. In #onpoli, we need to invest much more heavily in getting people out of their cars, especially for trips in and between cities. It is doable, but it involves real investment & vision.

The interpretation of the past has been a target of the #CultureWars since the early-1990s. The best way to combat it is to learn it yourself, engage the historiography, & understand what professional historians do. Attacks like this must be condemned at all levels.

I worry deeply about the erosion of local & municipal politics (esp. in #onpoli). Cities have been one of the few layers of government living up to their fiduciary duty to their constituents. #cdnpoli

There are many stinky parts to the #SkillsDevelopment scandal in #onpoli. One of the worst is the fact that #onpse is on a lifeline & this money could be used to bolster institutions designed to prepare #Ontarians to contribute to our communities. #cdnpse

Day two of seasonal weather in #ldnont. What a welcome change.

I was a college student for 11 years and I’ve taught on college campus for 31 years. In those 42 years on campuses, only 4!were spent at a private school. The rest have been at underfunded public institutions. Friends, please don’t think of Harvard as representative of higher ed in the US. I don’t.

What Governor Pritzker is doing is right for his state, but it is vital for the Republic.

Yup. We need major change in our #onpoli. We should not tolerate this type of revolving door.

This is a world I want to live in. A place where adults engage communities & especially children in heathy & mature ways.

I will credit my posting about our unseasonably hot summer and fall, but today in #ldnont, for the first time in a long time, we will have seasonable weather, just one degree below the average. To keep it this way, you & I have to make good choices & push decision makers to embrace systemic change.

What is happening in the #UnitedStates is unambiguously illegal & unconstitutional. This video demonstrates the gross abuse of power that is taking place. There must be accountability.

Another lovely July day in #ldnont. We are eleven degrees above normal. I can’t help but wonder what this means for the coming winter. I am going to guess that in a week or two we just plunge through the fall. We need to be talking much more about the #ClimateCrisis.
