Hi @dannybate.bsky.social! Just read chapter O. Of Why Q Needs U. You mentioned that if Revelation 1:8 had been written in Hebrew or Aramaic, it would say “I am the A and the T” instead of Alpha and Omega. Fun fact: in the Syriac Peshitta, it actually does read “I am Olaph and Taw.” (ܐܢܐ ܐܠܦ ܘܬܘ)

Just signed up a couple days ago for @lcbmphd.bsky.social’s online Coptic class. Excited to learn a new language that’s so different from others I’ve studied! Also grateful for the asynchronous lectures, since I’m a teacher and this allows me to work at my own pace.

Just finished reading @younan.bsky.social’s translation of Narsai. I had never read any Narsai before, and I was blown away! (I especially loved Memra 21: On the Temptation of Christ and Memra 44: On the New Creation.) Makes we want to try to tackle some Narsai in Syriac now!

Hey @phil-lol-ogist.bsky.social Do you do any Gothic language stuff? If so, any recs for where to start learning Gothic? I’ve tried Lambdin’s Intro to Gothic before and gotten a few chapters in, but was frustrated because I couldn’t find a key anywhere to check my work on the exercises.

Siege question @bretdevereaux.bsky.social : I was reading Josephus recently, and noticed that when he talks about battering rams, he says that they were aimed and walls or towers, but not at gates. Is the battering ram against the gate a misconception, or just a different technique?

Just finished reading @hanavideen.bsky.social’s two delightful books on Old English. I’ve been dabbling in OE the past couple years, and these books are a fun little glimpse into the lives of people in medieval England. I highly recommend them whether you’re learning OE or just want a fun read.

Can’t put Osweald Bera down! Already on chapter 9 after just over a week. I’ve dabbled in Old English some over the past 5 or 6 years, and this has been my favorite OE book thus far! Loving the story so far and finding the pedagogy effective, too. @colingorrie.bsky.social
