My favorite thing about Steve DiBenedetto’s #painting is the sense of an embodied, hallucinatory vision that stares back at you. The sense that the work has its own alien consciousness that are the result different formal evolutions and processes. ‘The Octopus Paradox’ is not here to entertain you

Steve DiBenedetto at Derek Eller Gallery: One of the hardest things to do in #painting is work at a small scale and maintain a cohesive vision that holds the space both in the exhibition with larger paintings and internally within its limited area, while not overworking or clogging the surface.

A favorite small #sculpture by John Duff from his recent exhibition at Reena Spaulings Gallery. This has the intimacy of a small painting (Renaissance portrait on panel), but offers a mysterious transmutation of abstract materials in relation to the viewer. Yellow Wall Piece, 1967

Still thinking about the John Duff show at Reena Spaulings gallery. Upright and direct, they feel almost like portraiture. As wall reliefs distort the traditional 3rd dimension of #sculpture, forcing an uncomfortable view of the edges, but reward engagement beyond the merely pictorial.

Jasper Johns’ “Corpse and Mirror” in his show of crosshatch paintings at Gagosian Gallery. I love the starkness of the black and white set against shifting variations of tone, and the incursion of warm pink & collage. Oil, encaustic, and collage on canvas, in 2 parts (joined).

It’s always nice to see a well-curated, museum-quality investigation into a specific body of #painting. “Jasper Johns: Between the Clock and the Bed” is a great small (and free to the public) exhibit of his crosshatch paintings at Gagosian Gallery.

Dennis Dawson'Over Under Sideways Down' at Frosch & Co. I am always a sucker for an expansive series of serial investigations. The limitations of format expand possibilities of individual investigations, forming a broader cohesive statement than any single work.

2 very interesting shows of #minimalist #painting up in NYC right now: David Novros at Paula Cooper Gallery and Merrill Wagner: Marking Time at David Zwirner. Both are less well known than they deserve to be, and make use of a complex integration of faceted supports and specifically keyed color.

Another #drawing that is inspired by the doubling in Pynchon’s #GravitysRainbow. This started with the same@structure as MP 38, experimenting with different materials for block text; playing with the division of the character and actor/ Hollywood star Mindless Pleasures 46
