Many they really messed up their nice, minimalist spacing. Instead of a clean presentation they look like that art fair booth that’s trying to stuff in too much stuff.

Similar with artists who've had rigorous crit sessions; it's probably similar across people training in creative fields. Figuring out how to define your work when there is no "right" answer mush change you.

Nnedi Okorafor's works are fantastic. Her focus on African stories, that don't privilege a white male superhero type protagonist in a Western-European setting is very refreshing and opens up genre to whole continents being ignored.

Really depends on the artist. Kerry James Marshall, for instance, is at the other end of that spectrum, and will painstakingly describe what every square inch of his paintings means and why he painted it that way, and it's fantastic.

I think about this a lot. I can usually explain my thinking for any painting I make & because of the text, people want to know, so they ask and I’ll tell them. I wonder if I wouldn’t be better served by not saying anything, or “maintaining the mystery & openness of viewer interpretation.”

Though it can be frustrating, it is such a gift that Jasper Johns refuses to disclose anything. In a lot of ways, the artist who resembles him the most in this regard is David Lynch.

I’d be curious about analyzing this within the historical context of what is the most popular medium of the time. In the heyday of French Academic painting the Impressionists were more notorious than appreciated, but public opinion caught up.
