Of the 10 Henry Hathaway films I've watched, this is the first time I've seen him use a dolly but he uses it to track with the actors so he can just keep the same composition. Not that noteworthy as a cinematic technique I suppose, but interesting that he was so averse to camera movement

It's so interesting to compare the filmmaking of these old Hollywood guys – while Michael Curtiz can't *not* use a dolly, Henry Hathaway never moves the camera outside of simple dollies and pans. If Curtiz were directing, he would have pulled out and pushed in but Hathaway accomplishes it with cuts

Watching some of the Backrooms stuff on youtube it looks like it's entirely built around POV shots of a guy walking around an empty room. Occasionally a person shows up in the distance, chases them, and then they run away. Apparently this was such a good concept that it needed to be a feature film

Henry Hathaway does something similar but his images are much richer, because there's depth to the picture, he doesn't just have the actors at a flat angle facing each other. Plus real use of negative space. It's center framed, but these are fundamentally different images if you cropped in

I don't get the premise of The Substance because Demi Moore's character gets nothing out of using it. All it did was create a younger clone of her who has her own life and every time the clone was doing something she had to hide in a closet unconscious. And the clone kept on actively harming her

Now here's a movie that trusts the audience to put two and two together and doesn't have to emphasize the same plotpoint a dozen times

The Substance uses like a million shots/cuts per scene to make it feel like the pacing is snappy but individual scenes are really slow

A problem with modern horror movies is they bring the computer into things and then can't figure out a good way to visualize going on the computer and getting scared. But the easiest way to get around this is to just not have a scene where somebody gets scared on the computer
