Really brilliant day visiting fruit farms in São Paulo state. Lots to think about, comparing Brazilian v. UK strawberry cultivation - diff substrates, diff pests (though did see an SWD!) & very different pollinators! Super-cute seeing strawberry flowers pollinated by stingless bees! #Horticulture

Cool video of Forcipomyia (biting midge) larvae feeding on slimy surfaces. This is the genus that includes many cocoa pollinating midge species; we need to know more about what they like so we can provide for their ecological needs! That way, happy Forcipomyia spp. & well-pollinated cocoa!

Never underestimate urban and post-industrial biodiversity. Our route took us from McDonalds, past the household waste tip & the sewage works, to the urban-fringe country park on a former landfill. Alongside the plants, we encountered Buff-tailed Bumblebees, a Pochard, & lots of Teal. #urbanwildlife

We clocked up 32 species in flower on our urban #NewYearPlantHunt in Sittingbourne, including Blue Fleabane, Narrow-leaved Ragwort, and Musk Stork's-bill. Musk Stork's-bill was super-abundant on the roadside verges, but we only saw one with flowers. #KentNature @bsbibotany.bsky.social
