Paladins with Misty Step are insane in D&D

There's a lot of discussion around how #dnd "can't be horror" because of survivability being too high. Yesterday the party of lvl 11 was attacked and hunted by enemies of CR20 and up. They were terrified and fleeing for their lives, akin to our Call of Cthulhu games. Felt pretty horror to me 🤷

I love the "guide in character sheet" #ttrpg concept for Mothership and other games doing it. But does this mean a sheet without it makes the game inferior? Or does this only work for "simpler" sheets? Is there a happy medium? I am inspired by it either way!

hey, how about at some point during a big pivotal moment in your #ttrpg with an NPC, you ask your players "So, does this NPC do a? or do they do b?" Neither is an optional choice, just dramatic. Go! Do it!

Interesting to see the negative response D&D 5e hacks get #ttrpg design spaces. On the one hand, it's just a distaste for an, at best, flawed system. On the other hand, a lot of the time 5e Hacks are pretty poor, due to the lack of experience from the hacker. P.S I am one of those 5e hackers 😬

Had a player state they're "enjoying the new #ttrpg game but they're more excited about our 6 year long campaign sessions" To me this is pretty obvious, but I wonder what would the opposite mean? I wish the new game was AMAZING but new rules, world, table and campaign needs time. Am I wrong?

It's so funny how 90% of problems with #dnd be solved with: Make it harder than you think your players can handle.

Considering adding "Near Miss" vs a "miss", akin to Partial Success and Full Success in our #ttrpg Miss is <= 5 to the DC, as usual, you miss. But a Near Miss is >5 and may add a condition, such as Off Balance or Distracted. And this works both ways! Now a Miss won't always be missed opportunity

If you ask someone how Into the Odd has streamlined their games, they will probably mention removing the "to hit" roll and just rolling damage. I blasphemously ask the question: can we re-incorporate accuracy and missed attacks with Into the Odd without turning it into a major slog? #osr #ttrpg

Designing levelling up as a built in sequence in our #trrpg There's a narrative step lead by the players, followed by a roll to determine a boon tied to a background character moment, leading to actual skill selection. Ties in with the current adventure and player background. Not unique, but fun!

The issue with rolling dice for fun in a #ttrpg is "bad rolls", even with "failing forward" can feel like lack of control. The irony is good rolls are also due to the same lack of control, but it doesn't feel that way!

This year was huge for us. Not only did we continue with our epic campaigns, on year 6 now, but we kicked off a new campaign in our new game, started running CoC, and got our hands on dozens of new games! Our 2026 will be great for #ttrpgs! Hope yours is too!

Whats stopping YOU from adding FIRE LANCES to your medieval fantasy #ttrpg campaign? They probably existed as early as the 13th century China and are literally FIRE SHOOTING LANCES. 10ft reach. Piercing damage. FIRE DAMAGE in a 15FT cone as (i.e Burning hands) as a Bonus Action.

Next year will be a huge year for us: We'll end TWO 5+ years long #dnd campaigns, while continuing our custom game campaign. This means finally more room for OTHER games. Call of Cthulhu, Slugblaster, Memento Mori, Brindlewood Bay and Dragonbane are on my radar so far. It'll be a big #ttrpg year

The coolest thing you can do in a #ttrpg is create an environment that fuels your players creativity, enabling them to do cool stuff that feels great and epic.

Today our 3 hour #dnd session took place on one map, specifically a balcony with a dining table, and was 90% intrigue and social encounter, as the party tried to figure out who was conspiring. So minimal yet so dense, exciting and tense, with some awesome player decisions! Be social 🤩

To elicit fear in your #ttrpg, don't describe details, describe thoughts and feelings. Want to describe an eldritch structure? Don't bother with descriptive terms of the thing, just focus on how it "causes nausea to observe" or "has angles that should not be". Leave the rest to the players!

It does actually Bother Me that so many talented TTRPG writers who write for major companies (Paizo included, this is not a callout of anyone in particular but the whole industry) are broke as fuck when people who play the game for money are charging much more for the hour than the writers get.

Today we're going to play a #TTRPG 5e hack we've been working on for 3 years and I started ttrpgs with D&D 5e 6 years ago and can count the systems I've played in one hand and we're loving it.

With all the frankly corrupt stupidity or the hardware and software market, I am reassured that at least our #ttrpg hobby, that does depend on technology, can still be largely low fidelity, working with as little as paper and pen, and at most a basic computer. Most importantly though, it's people 😊

I once used to worry about challenges in a #ttrpg being trivialised or too easy. Then I learned to stop caring. "Too easy" is very solvable, just make challenges or encounters that are simply too hard or even impossible. Then consider quick solutions speed up the game and make players happy!

All of the companies that make the software I use are increasing their prices, to account for an "investment" in AI. I'm sat here imagining how my clients would feel if I added 30% to each invoice, because I "really got into gambling".

Like with all media and art: An experience doesn't have to be fun, it can just be rewarding. Same goes for games. Some people want pure fun out of a game but others want something else. As a #ttrpg designer and GM, providing both, especially at the same time, is the hardest thing to do imo!

During the latest #ttrpg debrief players felt "they had so many choices but no clarity where to go under time pressure, and everything is so high stakes... but ultimately they're having fun!" But that was my goal! Campaign ending with difficulty of choice, paranoia and urgency! I will adjust though

The most interesting aspect in playing a cookie-cutter #dnd campaign along side a Horror/Investigation heavy D&D campaign, both at level 11, is seeing how it's imo easy to make D&D work with less combat, but you still NEED combat/conflict due to how most classes are set up, esp at higher levels.

As much as I love a good map or a good scene art, I don't want to lose that theater of mind (ToM) muscle in my #ttrpg Realized watching @mysteryquest.bsky.social, don't use tactical maps for combat, and I don't even think about it! I'll never stop using maps, but going to lean more on ToM!

#ttrpg Our Crit Rules are simple but satisfying Roll damage dice twice, but the minimum damage is half. If your attack is 1d8 Roll 2d8 Any roll below a 5 (4.5, half a d8) is a 5 So if I get a 2 & 6 Damage is 11 (5 + 6) If my roll is a 2 & 3 Damage is 10 (5+5) If damage is 6 & 7 Damage is 13

It's interesting how I always hear about big backstories in #ttrpg or PCs that take the central part of a campaign. I've only experienced players that, want to have an interesting arc, but express no interest in being a chosen one or being uniquely special. I as a player also prefer that. Do you?

I need my fantasy and scifi #worldbuilding to be at the extremes: Either grounded, focusing mostly on real world issues, perhaps with a twist of folklore... ...or batshit insane with dream logic and abstraction. Very little of the in-between satisfies me, but that's ok! How about you?
