#HappyBirthday Roberto Guerrero, 67, the first Colombian #F1 driver. A winner in #F3 & #F2, he started 21 F1 GPs in uncompetitive Ensigns (pictured here in ’82, at Hockenheim, where he scored his best F1 result, 8th) then he moved to #IndyCar (or #ChampCar) where he won races again.

#OnThisDay in ’80, at Calder Park, Melbourne, local hero & new #F1 world champion Alan Jones won the non-championship #AusGP in a Williams FW07B (pic). Bruno Giacomelli was 2nd in an Alfa 179, & Didier Pironi was 3rd in an Elfin MR8 #F5000 car.

#HappyBirthday Skip Barber, 89. The founder of the eponymous racing school & series, he had 6 goes at #F1 in a March 711, beginning at Monaco in ’71 (pic), where he DNQ’d because he never got a dry lap, & ending at Watkins Glen in ’72, finishing 16th. He was quick though.

#OnThisDay in 2011 Lewis Hamilton won the #AbuDhabiGP for McLaren, & when he left the team a year later he gave me the boots he wore to win that GP. They’re now in my study at home, along with a few other mementoes & a lot of books. Working with Lewis was an honour & a pleasure.

#HappyBirthday Masahiro Hasemi, 80. When the first #F1 #JapaneseGP was held, ’76, he was given a drive by Matsuhisa Kojima, a banana importer, in his Kojima F1 car (pic). On Dunlops the car was fast, qualifying just 1.11sec off the pole, despite an error by Hasemi.

#OnThisDay 30 years ago Hill (Williams) won the last #AusGP at Adelaide, from the pole, with fastest lap, 2 laps ahead of 2nd-placed Panis (Ligier). #AnorakFact: it was one of only 2 #F1 GPs in which the winner lapped the field twice (the other was Stewart at Montjuïc in ’69).

Remembering Paul Emery, born #OnThisDay in 1916. He started one #F1 GP, Silverstone ’56, in his Emeryson F1 car. Pic: caning his ’51 Emeryson #F3 car, not sure where. “I built my own cars because I wanted to race & I never had enough money to race except by building my own cars.”

Peter Whitehead was born #OnThisDay in 1914. A gentleman farmer, he scored one #F1 GP podium, 3rd at Reims in ’50, in his own Ferrari 125 (pic), the first F1 car Enzo Ferrari sold - #AnorakFact. Pre-WW2 he’d won the ’38 #AusGP, & in WW2 he’d been a major in the Royal Tank Corps.

Remembering Gil de Ferran, born #OnThisDay in ’67. He was a lovely, friendly guy; a superspeedway megastar; & a fine racer besides. He died suddenly in December 2023, aged just 56, & he’s very much missed still.

Remembering Maria Teresa de Filippis, born #OnThisDay 99 years ago. The first of only 2 women ever to start a championship #F1 GP (the other being Lella Lombardi in the ’70s), de Filippis drove 3 F1 GPs in ’58, in a Maserati 250F, the last at Monza (pic). She died in 2016.

Remembering Lucien Bianchi, great-uncle of Jules, born #OnThisDay in ’34. He started 17 #F1 GPs, best 3rd at Monaco in ’68 in a Cooper T86B. He was more successful at Le Mans, where he won that year in a Ford GT40 (pic) & where he was sadly killed in testing the following year.

Remembering Óscar González (left), one of only 4 Uruguayan #F1 drivers, born #OnThisDay in 1923. He started one F1 GP, Argentina ’56, in a Maserati, finishing 6th, sharing a car with fellow countryman Alberto Uria. #AnorakFact: the race featured only Ferraris & Maseratis.

Masten Gregory, who partnered Jochen Rindt to victory at Le Mans in ’65 in a Ferrari 250LM, never won a championship-status #F1 GP, but he won a non-championship F1 race, the #Kanonloppet at Karlskoga, Sweden, in a Lotus-BRM, in ’62. He died #OnThisDay 40 years ago, aged just 53.

Remembering Peter Arundell, born #OnThisDay in ’33. He started 11 #F1 GPs, ’63-66, all for Lotus, his best results his first 2 F1 GPs, consecutive 3rd places at Monaco (pic) & Zandvoort in ’64. #AnorakFact: the next F1 driver to kick off with 2 podiums was Lewis Hamilton in 2007.

#OnThisDay 15 years ago Nico Hülkenberg started the #BrazilGP from the pole, in a Williams, having been fastest in a damp quali. He was was soon passed by the Red Bull of Seb Vettel, who won. Hülkenberg ended up 8th. I’ve worked with both of them at Aston Martin: great guys.

#OnThisDay in ’93, in Adelaide, the great Ayrton Senna won an #F1 GP for the 41st & last time. 😥

#HappyBirthday Alex Ribeiro, 77. A devout Christian, he often raced with ‘Jesus Saves’ on his cars (pic: March 782, ’78 Nürburgring #F2, a race he won). He started 10 #F1 GPs, was the Brazil football team’s pastor in the ’94 World Cup, then drove the FIA Medical Car for years.

I’m looking forward to reading Jon Saltinstall’s brand-new Lella Lombardi biography. At Montjuïc in ’75 she became the only woman to score points in #F1, which feat has never been repeated this past half-century, & she was quite publicity-shy, so I’m hoping I’ll learn a lot.
