#HappyBirthday Christian Danner, 68. The first #F3000 champ (’85), he raced single-seaters, sports cars & touring cars, including 36 #F1 GPs & 18 #IndyCar  races. He’s a nice & clever guy, too. #AnorakFact: he still holds the old Nürburgring #F2 lap record.

#HappyBirthday Richard Attwood, 86. He started 16 #F1 GPs, driving BRMs, Lotuses, Coopers & Brabhams, best result 2nd for BRM at Monaco in ’68 (pic), where he also took fastest lap. Oh & he won the #LeMans24Hours in ’70 in a Porsche 917, Porsche’s first ever Le Mans triumph.

I’ve just got home from spending a great day at the British Motor Museum, where I was co-hosting Racing Pride’s #AcceleratePride. One of the exhibitors was Nichols Cars, whose superb N1A is a seriously desirable modern reimagining of the iconic McLaren M1A #CanAm car. #GoodFriday

Fast & fun drive yesterday from the lovely village of May-en-Multien, where I’ve been visiting an old friend, to the small town of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, in the Seine-et-Marne département, along open, empty French D-roads that remind Londoners like me what motoring should be.👌

But for a clumsy lorry driver who did an illegal U-turn near Birmingham in ’81, today would have been Mike Hailwood’s 86th birthday, for he was born #OnThisDay in ’40. A superb bike racer & a fine car racer, he was also a wonderful character. Pic: chatting with James Hunt.

#OnThisDay 30 years ago, in Brazil, Damon Hill achieved a significant landmark: his 15th #F1 GP win. Why significant? Because it took him ahead of his father Graham, who won 14 F1 GPs. 2nd was Jean Alesi, 3rd an unhappy-looking Michael Schumacher. The 4th man is of course Pelé.

Bertil Roos, who died #OnThisDay 10 years ago, aged 72, was more successful in the US than in Europe. He started one #F1 GP (Anderstorp, ’74, Shadow DN3; pic) & was #SCCA #SuperVee champion in ’73, won races in #CanadianAtlantic in ’75, & was #CanAm 2000cc champion in ’82 & ’83.

#OnThisDay in ’80 Nelson Piquet won an #F1 GP for the first time, at Long Beach, in a Brabham BT49. Pic: on the same day his fellow countryman, Emerson Fittipaldi, drove his eponymous Fittipaldi F7 to 3rd place, his 35th & final F1 GP podium.

#OnThisDay in ’74 Carlos Reutemann won the #SouthAfricanGP in a Brabham BT44: one of the great car/driver combos of that glorious #F1 decade.

#HappyBirthday Mike Thackwell, 65. The 8th-youngest driver to qualify for an #F1 GP, he started 2, in ’80 & ’84. He was quick in #F3 & he blitzed Euro #F2 in ’84, winning 7 races out of 11. I gather he now spends much of his time surfing off the south coast of England. Cool dude.

#OnThisDay in ’98, at Interlagos, Mika Häkkinen scored a grand chelem victory - pole position, fastest lap, leading from lights to flag. It was his 3rd consecutive #F1 GP win, & the 3rd consecutive 1-2 finish for McLaren. It really doesn’t get a lot better than that.

#OnThisDay in ’81, at Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Reutemann famously disregarded his Williams team’s ‘Jones-Reut’ pit board to beat his team-mate Alan Jones to #BrazilGP victory.

#OnThisDay in ’83, at Long Beach, McLaren’s John Watson produced one of the most amazing drives in #F1 history. Having qualified 22nd, he stormed through the field on race day... & won. It was Wattie’s 5th & final GP victory. He was a much underrated driver, brilliant on his day.

#OnThisDay in 2012 was run that year’s #MalaysianGP, won by Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) from Checo Pérez (Sauber) & Lewis Hamilton (McLaren). In 4 days’ time the same 3 drivers, 14 years older & wiser, will be tackling the #JapaneseGP, all driving for different teams of course.

#OnThisDay in ’84, at Jacarepaguá, Rio, Brazil, 5 drivers made #F1 GP debuts: Ayrton Senna, Martin Brundle, Stefan Bellof, Philippe Alliot & François Hesnault. Senna (Toleman) was the race’s first DNF, but Brundle (Tyrrell; pic) raced brilliantly to 5th, only to be DSQ’d later.

Fritz d’Orey was born #OnThisDay in ’38. The son of the Packard importer to Brazil, in ’58, at 20, he bought a Ferrari 375, stuck a Chevy V8 in it, & won the #Interlagos500km. He drove 3 #F1 GPs, 2 in a Scuderia Centro Sud Maser 250F & one in a Tec-Mec Maser 250F (pic). (1/2)

#OnThisDay in ’91 Ayrton Senna won his home #F1 GP for the first time. Senna judged a dry-wet race brilliantly, nursing a failing gearbox by keeping it in 6th. Having cried out on the car-to-pits radio on the slow-down lap, he was physically & emotionally shattered on the podium.

Remembering Brian Naylor, born #OnThisDay in 1923. A navy man in WW2, he raced 7 #F1 GPs (’57-61), first in Coopers then in his own JBWs (pic), without success. #AnorakFact: he finished 42nd in the ’61 #Daytona500, thus becoming the first European driver to race in #Nascar.

Remembering Eugène Martin, born #OnThisDay in 1915. He drove 2 #F1 GPs, Silverstone (pic) & Bremgarten ’50, in a Talbot-Lago, DNF-ing in both. In ’49 he’d won the #AixLesBainsCircuitDuLacGP in a Jicey-BMW. #AnorakFact: later he penned the Martin-Spéciale road car, which failed.
