It was such a huge thing for us in elementary school- lining up for our turn to have a sugar cube dosed with polio vaccine. My parents were terrified of polio having grown up in the era when you could catch polio from going swimming or just being with someone else who was infected. Why go back?

The children of the ‘50s knew about polio. FDR and the March of Dimes. Classmates with leg braces and crutches. Iron lungs. I had both the Salk and Sabin vaccines. Even at 6 I was glad to get my Salk jab. I knew it could save my life.

My dad and one of his sisters got sent away for the summer when his older brother caught it. My mammaw (a nurse) put the affected child on a crazy hard exercise regimen in his recovery so he would have something approaching normal mobility...which he lost as he got older and died too early. Scary
