For today’s Movement Monday, we’d like to highlight Be Kind Birmingham.  Be Kind Birmingham is an organization that runs a mobile Free Store, popping up in assorted locations in Birmingham. They consistently show up for community members, ensuring people can have access to much-needed resources.

Everyone wish a very Happy Birthday to our fearless,  Executive Director Jenice Fountain! Since joining in 2020 as Family Justice Organizer, she has turned lived experience into programs that assure the marginalized folks in the Deep South thrive.

Dr. Baker partners with us monthly for Freedom & Flow, an intimate writing workshop covering topics acknowledging the state of the world, and how we can be radically responsible for the well-being of ourselves and our community.

We'd love to take a moment to wish our lovely Deputy Director, Dr. Orisha Bowers, a Happy Birthday!  Dr. O joined the Yellowhammer Fund team in January, and has been uplifting us all ever since!  She has been supplying staff with guidance, professional development, and structure without fail.

On Friday, we had the pleasure of partnering with URGE Alabama to write postcards to our Legislators, thanking them for voting to issue tax exemptions on menstrual and childcare essentials, and to urge them to vote no to SB3, which would promote abstinence-only sex education in schools.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the original stewards of the Deep South: the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek (Muscogee), and Cherokee peoples, whose lands we now inhabit.

Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month honors the legacy, leadership, and care of Latine communities in the fight for Reproductive Justice. Their resilience and vision have contributed to movements for liberation—and continue to light the way forward.

Coming out is a deeply personal decision. In many ways, our society has come a long way to make LGBTQQIA+ folks feel safer to live in their truth. However, we still have a long way to go.  Today, we recommit ourselves to the protection, support, and care of any queer person who chooses to come out.

Our Healthcare Access Director has been working triple time to ensure that everyone who comes to us seeking Abortion Care can receive services. We are glad to say we have funded 295 Abortions since reopen! These are the current numbers in terms of funding from our Healthcare Access Line last month.

Later this month our Executive Director, Jenice Fountain, will be heading to the UNITY summit to meet with funders, organizers, and community leaders to encourage people to reimagine how philanthropy can, and should, operate.
