We tried compiling a global database of deposit descriptions of pyroclastic density current deposits. The aim was to help us do big data analysis, look for common trends, and to support modelling. We got some interesting results but also, found some really significant issues and gaps #IAVCEI2025

I had the pleasure of attending the GeoHab 2025 conference in Key West. It was an amazing conference to be introduced into the wonderful diversity and science of geology/biology/habitat interactions. Thanks to the amazing organisers and presenters who made it epic!

Delighted that this paper has hit p[ublication. Nemi did a truly amazing job on all of this, and together with 3 other papers (1 published 2023, the others winging their way to print soon) has really moved forward our understanding of moisture in pyroclastic sediments.

I dunno who it was who wrote 25,000 words of a book, of which roughly a third are "CHECK THIS" or "FIND REFERENCE HERE", but when I find out I am going to murder them

Finally we rounded up our day in the “Grand Canyon” where we looked at a beautiful braided river sequence of volcanogenic conglomerates and sandstones!

Day 2: Today we travelled north into Slovakia 🇸🇰 where we observed a basaltic diatreme section and had lots of discussions surrounding maar formation and infill Then we explored a tuff ring with a castle on top! Look at those baked clasts 🌋😍

After this we went to Ipolytarnóc and saw some primary PDCs and some old fossil footprints. Thank you to our amazing and enthusiastic guide! Finally today we went to Tar, where we observed andesitic volcaniclastics and a debris avalanche with some big boulders! 🌋

Day 3: We started off the morning with a bonus stop to look at some lovely submarine deposited accretionary lapilli. Check out the beautiful cored acclaps with a pumice centre 🌋

Then we saw evidence of dilute currents with low angle cross bedding and acc laps - with a castle on top! Finally, some incredible manganese nodules inside the ignimbrite 🌋

Day Four: Today we explored the Demjén ignimbrite from east to west. First we saw it outcropped in a quarry with some fantastic elutriation pipes

Day One: Today on our field trip we visited Sámsonháza and saw this amazing outcrop! We looked at the contact between andesitic sills, volcaniclastics, and peperite 🌋 Lots of good rock chats and some great local food! Bring on day 2!

A key feature of our Catastrophic Flows research group meetings these days seems to be noodles. Oodles of noodles alongside volcanoes chat. Fantastic to catch up with @nemiwalding.bsky.social @drnatashadowey.bsky.social @pyroclasticpete.bsky.social ❤️🌋

This week I started as a postdoctoral researcher at Kelpie Geoscience Ltd in Edinburgh. I’m feeling very grateful for what I’m doing and having a volcano beer, looking over an old volcano, after a week of looking at volcanic rocks. Amazing. 🌋

These are oyster shells that washed up post-storm on the Solent (Southern England, U.K.) The oysters have attached to and grown around these pebbles. Why is this? Do they attach to a pebble in a muddy substrate as something to hold on to? What do you think?
