Anxiety has been creeping into my disaster risk reduction teaching in recent years, beause of the sheer scale of horror, and because in our comfortable UK seminar room, we are in a position of such privilege. Exploring unimaginable inequity, while literally being within structures of that inequity.

It has an extreme impact on profs well-being too. How can we teach other stuff while so much more important things wait. What’s the use of algebraic geometry in the face of this?

Add to that the complications of first line managers often being drawn from the group they are managing and given little training and support in the skills needed to manage well …. It’s a tough gig.

I’ve always seen (in practice) that mentoring and line-managing as conflicted roles. There are some amazing line-managers who go out of their way to offer mentorship. But from a mentee’s view point, being mentored by someone who holds power over them is a tricky position.

At least this is how I view mentoring. Like once you’re in a position to be able to mentor it’s important to do that and follow the Pay It Forward concept. Important to do positive things for early career folks like senior mentors did for us. But for good and not for ourselves/The Cookies.
