Today is the first time in 10 years that I’m not about to start a new year of teaching as I’m starting a year-long Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship. Strange not to be in the thick of induction but very grateful to have my first uninterrupted research time in a decade!

Trying to find something Tajani (I think) said, after the new citizenship law for Italians abroad was passed in March, about the threat posed by the Italian diaspora of 80 million & the need to avoid all of them being able to claim citizenship. I can't find this anywhere now! Can anybody help me?

Amidst piles of marking, it was a pleasure yesterday and today to attend a workshop at Senate House on approaches to uncovering the afterlife of the Italian empire, featuring academics, artists, writers and curators. Lots of rich discussions and best practice examples.

Yes, mobility in the early months of the war has been hugely overlooked. In my book (out in July!), I write about the Italian refugee crisis in Aug-Sept 1914 when 500,000 Italian emigrants fled the war in France, Belgium and Germany. Looking forward to reading your book!

So many memories of being in St Peter’s square (and even receiving Communion) at the funeral of Pope John Paul II 20 years ago. We slept overnight in streets nearby to be assured of being in the piazza for the service. Unforgettable. RIP Francis.

Aside from knowing that the Disney film Moana needed to be retitled in Italy because Moana was the name of a v famous porn actress in the ‘90s, I didn’t know much about the history of porn in Italy so I really enjoyed the film Diva Futura the BFI as part of the Cinema Made in Italy Festival.

Really enjoyed seeing the new Futurism to Concrete Poetry show at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art yesterday. I’ve written so much about these World War 1 visual poems, it was a pleasure to see them displayed and widely enjoyed!

Yes, this. I started teaching Italian in the UK in 2010 and it feels like we have just been a permanent state of crisis since then. Terribly sad that so few students have access to languages study at school and university levels.
