Another milestone yesterday. Since I bought my 2014 #Volkswagen #Polo BlueGT almost five years ago, we’ve done 40,000 miles together. And I still love it. Handsome, fast, and economical (47-52mpg from a 1.4-litre, 138bhp turbo engine) it really is an understated - and underrated - gem.

It's only because I care and I'm an enthusiast, but why does @volkswagenuk.bsky.social not pay attention to the details? The #GTI World website (www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/gti-world...) is great, but why the apostrophes in the car decade numberplates, when they don't appear in the background? #VW

We all know the #Volkswagen #Golf #GTI celebrates its 50th birthday in 2026. The September 1975 issue of German magazine Gute Fahrt (go on, snigger) featured an early pre-production car, with different 'GTI' font and steering wheel. VW made the right call with the final production versions of both.

The Polo was an important entrant in the emerging front-wheel-drive hatchback segment of the market, joining established rivals such as the Renault 5, Fiat 127 and Honda Civic. Media reviews were excellent, with the car quickly becoming the benchmark of its class.

This late 1975 UK-market brochure showcases the simplicity of the very first Volkswagen Polo hatchback, offered with an 895cc engine (capable of 82mph) in N or L trim. There were seven colours available including two shades of red and two of yellow. #carbluesky

The VW Polo was simply a slightly more basic badge-engineered version of the 1093cc Audi 50, a model introduced in West Germany in 1974 as the replacement for the old rear-engined NSU small car range. Offered in many continental markets, the 50 was never sold in the UK.
