a favorite poetry "move" is a last line that is so strange outside of the context of the poem a reader exiting the text is bewildered at how the text normalized the ending. it doesn't even have to be a weird line in of itself! I think "saying blackberry blackberry blackberry" works wonderfully!

amazing how consistently "remove the bad parts" works as an editing tool, but also how consistently "write the bad parts" is as a tool to get to the good stuff

Put the dead into your poems without garbing them in your grief. Give them cake, put on their favorite music. Listen to their gossip. Let them tell you how they've learned to bake bread. To carve clarinet reeds. Let them comb your hair. Help them remember the color orange. The scratch of wool.

some snakes do this thing where after they swallow something huge they wiggle their jaws back into place but when they do it they look like someone saying “you should make this simile a metaphor”

In general, my go-to editing tips/thoughts: 1. Read the piece out loud, preferably loudly. Where your tongue trips is where it's awkward for readers too. 2. Familiar language is bad and is often the result of a familiar tone dragging the piece toward said language. Be different!

in celebration of autumn being a week away: who are your favorite fall poets, or what are your favorite fall poems? for example, I think of Brigit Pegeen Kelly as a fall poet, but more of a September/early October fall. Like this poem: summery in subject, autumnal in execution:

a neat trick if you want to write something that risks sentimentality is to just add a crime, this works in the same way as adding a horse to a poem to make it more beautiful, adding a bowl to reference the dead, adding tiny infantrymen in reference to regret/anxiety, etc.

there's something so lovely/funny to me about how there's no comma before the "and" in the fifth line of David Berman's "Snow," it really captures how quickly an older brother lies to their sibling also the end! think of how many questions young ones ask that go unanswered
