The reason I started saying this is b/c many of my students haven’t had opportunities to actually think for themselves or collaboratively come to consensus to shape an idea. I blame this on k-12 standardized tests/worksheets and poor/uneven implementation of NGSS (what science ed *should* be).

Pro tip: keep a document of ideas for projects and papers. BUT split them into things YOU want to do vs. something SOMEONE should do (you would be ok not being involved). You can also have a list of things that would be a good student project. Then when you have an idea it has a home.

I received a comment about feeling like we're getting more magnitude 6+ earthquakes lately. It's funny how recent news can influence our perceptions. Here's global M6+ earthquakes for the last 25 years, and zoomed to the last 3 years. It's human nature to look for patterns. What do you see?

This is from AGU last year -- number of volcanoes erupting on each day from the GVP. The point I was making is that it was stable the approximate last 10 years, but there was a big jump around 2000 thanks to improved detections of eruptions from MODIS and other satellite sensors.

This looks consistent with (official) reports of 10-20 m run-ups in Kamchatka/Okhotsk. With complex topo/bathy short wavelength features like the waves seen here can develop and superimpose on the long period tsunami. We've seen this in other places. Time will tell if this can be verified

This is tide gauge data from the Chatham Islands, ~700 km east of New Zealand. The tsunami arrived ~14-15 hours after the earthquake and we recorded a tsunami of around 20-30 cm. The tsunami also travelled to South America and reflected back towards New Zealand.
