NOAA is undercutting their own agency from providing timely tsunami warnings. This affects more than just Alaska- many earthquakes and tsunamis that originate there impact communities across the Pacific.

Went for a run in Helsinki and cars actually stop when the pedestrian light is on at crosswalks. No one speeding up to try and beat me to the intersection. Even on a slip lane, drivers were aware of bikes/peds. Wild.

Going deep into the minutes linked in the ABC article: it looks like Kerr County tried to get a river warning system up and running in 2016 but was thwarted by someone who just doesn't like the idea of sirens....

I still can't get past the idea that people in America are now supposed to accept that this is a valid form of law enforcement and just assume it's fine when random dudes in groups with face-coverings, no ID, no warrant, & no uniform grab people off the street and force them into unmarked vehicles

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

One impact of the NSF freeze: They fund the small nonprofit, EarthScope, that manages seismic and GPS stations used worldwide to detect and warn of earthquakes and navigate autonomous vehicles. EarthScope can maybe make payroll this week. A prolonged freeze could see stations fail.

It's another "what's it going to be today?" sort of day, isn't it?

During an old project looking at alerting, I signed up to receive emergency alerts for every coastal county possible within California. Forgot about that decision until today... so many emails (which is good, counties were taking action and relaying tsunami warning/cancellation info)

Update from tsunami.gov for anyone who missed this part: NO #tsunami danger for the Washington Coast, Oregon, or California! Great news!
