Railroad / Railways full size and scale models.
An interesting video about Zepplins, past and present. One little fact that was news to me: ZF, the car transmission manufacturer is what is left of Zepplin's car business and is still owned by the Zepplin foundation!

My attempt at showing the difference between the two types of Kato N scale car lighting kits. The TGV uses the cool white type (11-212) whereas the TEE uses the “vintage” type which is a more yellow hue (11-214). The later is only available in Japan whereas the former can be ordered in the US.

Going through the incredibly fiddly process of adding lights to my N scale Kato TGV. Everything clicks together: no screws of glue needed! This is amazing engineering, especially considering that the same lighting kit fits a wide variety of cars.

How fast are N scale trains really? I decided to find out just how fast is the Kato N scale TGV. Here it is going at top speed powered by a Kato power pack. This video was filmed at 240 fps and rendered at 24 fps (so 10x slow motion). Speed is 380 km/h! (a world record at the time). (1/2)

I just rode on Lyon’s metro line C. As my fellow train nerds know, it is the only metro line with partial rack rail. That section replaced a funicular. Later, the line was extended at the top on the level, so there is no rack rail there.

You know you are on a fancy French restaurant when the steak knife is an Opinel folding pocket knife and the water is Thonon instead of the more pedestrian Evian… And yes, the food was excellent and since we are not in Paris, the wait staff was polite.

I came across an interesting power outlet design in France. It’s flat when nothing is plugged in. Its main surface retracts as a plug is inserted, revealing the ground connection. See Alt for more details.

We last visited my family in Europe is November a few years ago. In order to get some nicer weather, we decided to go in May this time and we got some snow! It wasn’t sticking to the ground, but still: snow in May!

You know you’re shopping in a European supermarket when the cart has four swivel casters and a chain that needs a coin to unlock it. This one also has vertical ergonomic handle bars. 1000 Internet point for guessing the store.

I’m building three 1:8 rail cars. The first one will be a brake van, so this thread is about building the brake components. First part is a ring with a tapered ID that will get cut in segments to become the brake pads. It doesn’t quite fit on a wheel because it got too thin to hold in the lathe!

I am thinking of using a BLDC motor out of a cordless drill to power a gauge 1 locomotive. I got a cheap motor controller from eBay to run it. See alt for a review… It works but it’s definitely a case of you get what you paid for!

The white SUV on the right of this picture is a Hyundai Nexo hydrogen car, running under its own power. Well, technically, when I took the photo, it was stuck in traffic, so not moving.
