I had a lot of fun making "Layout 1, Attempt 1" but it also reminds me how much I've learned about planning. All the track you see in the left pic needed to be pulled up when I gave up and started a new layout, and that's the source of most of my current layout's issues.

My best advice for scratchbuilding: Learn to use and buy a nice, affordable pair of digital calipers. They're your window into making sure things are properly aligned and the correct size! Also I have to say, scratchbuilding in styrene is really rewarding, it's a great material to learn with!

Made some adjustments, considering finger spacing, complexity, the fact this is basically the first time I'm doing this. Still going to have an elevate commuter platform, but let the track cross the channel more naturally by angling the bridge. Then there can be a walkway to the bldg.

Roadbuilding advice? Still thinking about it but I want to start this out as fresh asphalt then move it forward in time by weathering it, but only after getting "historical" pics. You could certainly do it the other way but then you couldn't tell the beginning of the story before the whole was done.

It occurred to me if you were into O gauge model trains (1:48) then this slightly-larger-than-that static model size would be perfect for forced perspective... imagine this in the foreground with a little maintenance crew working on the one of the engines.
