A note on the news that Costco is ending their relationship with Deschutes to make a co-branded Kirkland Lager. From the start Deschutes knew this would end. I have spoken with people throughout the company, and they always expected Costco to move on-no matter how successful the beer was. 1/3

Politics for those who indulge. You might find this one interesting, because I have framed the “schism” in the Democratic Party as something other than a squabble over policies. What we’re seeing is a new morality among young Dems that challenges the old morality in pointed and uncomfortable ways.

Breweries have started to embrace low-alcohol beers (at or below 3% ABV) as the newest market to exploit. The logic seems to borrow partly from the “success” of N/A beers, and partly on declining consumption. But I’m not buying it.

I am seeing a lot of hype building around low-alc beers (2-4%), which really mystifies me. Sierra Nevada is smarter than I am, but I really don’t get who is going to buy these beers—especially if they’re priced anything close to regular beer. Someone want to explain it to me?

Great piece. One point worth emphasizing: Those viewers who are "white and male will see themselves in these spots, too—hell, I’m a writer and I see myself in these ads." Beer marketers once recognized that viewers identify with values, often more so than demos. Today, fewer seem to get this.

The 70s and 80s were a heyday for beer commercials. The Pacific Northwest had their own genre of weirdness that buoyed them during consolidation. Rainier’s motorcycle and walking bottles, Oly’s Artesians (“I seen ‘em”) and Weinhard’s parochial Schludmiller ads were all massive here.

I made a similar case about “Dilly Dilly,” a campaign that penetrated public consciousness while Bud Light remained in freefall. It fell 5.9% the first year of the campaign; they canned it two years later.

I’ve noticed this trend in recent years, as well. One big caveat here is Modelo, with their very interesting “Mark of a Fighter” campaign. As beer gets tagged as elitist or frivolous, Modelo has reached out to blue-collar people of color in a campaign drenched in class/race cues.
