âThere are seeds of optimismâ: Yale prof reflects on the 5th anniversary of George Floydâs death
When it comes to improving the relationship between people of color and law enforcement âthere are seeds of optimism but only if weâre interested in building over the long term,â says Phillip Attiba Solomon, professor of African American Studies at Yale University. Retired Montgomery police captain Sonia Pruitt agreed but with cautious optimism. âThe question becomes, can you reform something thatâs working as it was designed to do,â she said. âAnd can we get people to come inside of these departments? Because you can only disrupt a system if you have someone on the inside.â
