For today’s #LayoverLibrary, I’m reading ‘Bowling Alone’ by Robert Putnam. The book maps out the causes of the decline of social capital in the US, including mass media and suburban sprawl, and offers suggestions for how to revive social capital in the US.

Some perspective: If Indianapolis completely eliminated parking minimums today, we would be the 101st city to do so. When we elected councillors who said they’d make progressive urban reforms, we would’ve been the 36th city to do so.

I’ve gotta be honest. I’m really disappointed in the new regional center guidelines. No doubt there are some good things in there, but DMD seems more focused on making car dependency less visible instead of reducing car dependency.

Indiana’s favorite rail trail just got a little bit longer this month! On October 3, the city of Sheridan opened the Monon Trail to the Boone County line, which gave me enough motivation to ride the entire thing this morning!

I feel like East 46th between College and the Keystone could be the city’s next great mixed use corridor but my god that street needs a redesign. I’d start with a MUP connecting the Monon and NKP and then add some planted medians that double as refuge islands for pedestrians.

Indy’s latest office to residential conversion is poised to start construction soon. Dubbed ‘Pembroke Place’, the conversion includes 179 units, indoor bike storage, and restoration of the building’s vault as a game room and lounge.

If Mike Braun was interested in solving the school transportation crisis in Indiana I would hope he would be on the phone with Sean Duffy to propose elimination of the tripper rule. It’s not guaranteed to fix all the issues, but it would certainly help in urban areas.

Despite the predictions that BRT and bike lanes would cause a traffic apocalypse- Indianapolis drivers have seen commute times drop, because more drivers are choosing to bike and take transit, which reduces congestion.

An interesting factoid: of the 6.8 residents in Indiana, only 4.7 million have licenses. That’s at least 30% of the state’s population that cannot drive, and we should be building our places to better reflect that reality.
