I struggled with 1300 but still got most of it and then got pretty much completely lost in 1200 and earlier. I'd say "Not bad for doing this in a foreign language!" but that honestly might’ve helped - and those linguistic classes from two decades ago had to be good for *something* after all. ;)

And that's all the third chapters cleared in my Octopath playthrough! I stepped off the beaten path and immediately got my ass handed to me by an optional boss that seems to unlock another job class, so... hmm.

"The remake doesn't replace the original" would ring truer if the legal way to play the original wasn't to spend 120+ bucks on a 25 year old used copy (to say nothing of having a modded or imported old console). Atelier Marie got it right: include the original in your remakes and then we can talk.

There seems to be a push towards smoother&smoother experiences, people going on about how this or that game "doesn't respect their time." But the older I get, the more I want games that are willing to show me what they want to be, friction & all, rather than be eager to please every step of the way.

I'm in Lufia(1)'s endgame now and oof. Sometimes the paths to these last few dungeons are long enough that I'm already exhausted by the time I get to the actual dungeon. But I want to see this predecessor to my childhood love through; there's so much about it that's really charming.

I'm in the middle of various second chapters in Octopath (the first one) and if *this* is the game in the series people tell you to skip, I'm going to fall head over heels for the second one. I love connecting NPCs to others halfway across the map (or sometimes just a town), (1/3)

Today, in "good problems to have, I guess": both the jp & the en actors for Octopath (still the first one for me) have such nice voices and I just can't choose. For some I might have a slight preference for jp, but the battle barks are also so good in this game that I want to understand all of them.

I just learned that Guild Wars Reforged exists (basically an update to the original game+expansions) and adds controller support, so now i'm tempted to try it out and see if my old characters from twenty (twenty!!) years ago are still there.

I think there's also a difference between pirating a videogame that's been out of print for decades and pirating a book from an author who's selling the thing for two bucks on half a dozen different sites and treating that like some morally righteous thing. (+a big middle ground between extremes.)

Things I like in the first couple hours of Lufia 1: - the hero is surprisingly emotionally mature in his relationship with Lufia and you can see where he got it from: the old innkeeper who raised them spells emotions/motivations out for them and mediates when they fight, and is supportive of them.

Another very reasonable gaming thing I'm contemplating: make a catgirl (hrothgar or miqo'te) in FFXIV for the single purpose of properly learning how to fish. Could I do this on my main character? Of course, nothing's stopping me! Would a thirty millionth fish-obsessed cat still be cute? Also yes.

Now that I've finished it, I think DQ11's greatest flaw is rolling credits after act 2 and calling the last third of its story "post-game." Both act 2 and 3 have some weaker moments but together, I enjoyed them greatly and the entire party is so much fun.

You know what? I think act 3 might be my favourite part of Dragon Quest XI. (For many reasons, but one small one is that the characters often have more interesting things to say in party chat now that they don't have to give you 284 variations of "go here to continue the plot" in every location.)
