Finished Demon Slayer now just waiting for the home release of the movie. And now we start One Piece. It’s annoying that the streaming release is cropped for widescreen.

Fun find at Hard Off Shinjuku: a square-buttoned Famicom. The original units had these, but Nintendo quickly realized they were uncomfortable and prone to getting stuck, hence the round A and B buttons were born.

Unseen Japan

There was a time when it seemed everyone in Japan at a cafe, restaurant, or bar was lighting up. In 1966, around 83% of men in Japan said they smoked. Those days are long gone. Today, only around a quarter of men smoke, and only around 8% of women take up the habit.

Walked into my classroom early this morning. When I turned on the lights there were many students sitting in the dark. Most of them not mine. However it reminded me of turning on lights and watching bugs scattering away.

Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, both from Watanabe Shinichiro, never caught on in Japan the way they did in the West. Where Evangelion and Akira play as manifestos on revolution, Watanabe's anime read more like self-help guides for escaping exploitative power structures.

Meiji surveyed Japan on which snack reigns supreme: Kinoko no Yama (mushroom-shaped, 1975) or Takenoko no Sato (bamboo-shaped, 1979). Of 300,000 respondents, Takenoko won in nearly every prefecture. The lone outlier? Fukushima, where residents still chose Kinoko.
