I already knew @bithellgames.bsky.social's Amberspire would be great because it has @hollynielsen.bsky.social's fingerprint on it. But I'm amazed at how *great* a city builder it is. This is peak game design. I'm particularly impressed by how it modelled environmental impact (as weather dice).

(I’m definitely going to point to this review when I give talks about games being able to to explore history without needing a historical setting)

Amberspire feels like a board game lost for a generation under a sofa and found years later by inquisitive grandchildren who make up their own ways of playing it. Weird, enthralling, and sometimes frustrating. I led 13 moon cities to what I hope was their doom.

Amberspire is a city builder that understands "city" through a narrative assemblage of historical fragments informing & enriching architecture, population, and challenges. Place, in all its wooly facets, is beautifully realized and feels so far removed from any tabula rasa infrastructure simulator.

Nic's games are so good and Amberspire is no exception! The world building is amazing in all dimensions.
