First Nations deaths in custody are a national shame. Working with the Blak Greens, we will continue to call for full implementation of Royal Commission recommendations, raising the age, ending racist violence, and self-determination for First Nations peoples.

Following the death of 16 yo Cleveland Dodd in WA, Indigenous women Hannah McGlade and Megan Davis made a formal complaint to the UN about Australia’s inaction on deaths in custody. This complaint will be heard in April.

Nearly one third of the RC recommendations are not fully implemented, and incarceration rates for First Nations adults and young people continue to get worse. Labor must show leadership on this issue if they are serious about Closing the Gap and respecting human rights.

Today marks 35 years since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody made 339 recommendations to address systemic racism and over-incarceration of First Nations people. Since then, more than 630 First Nations people have died in custody, including 12 so far in 2026.
