found this for 25¢ and it's pretty good. A mid 80s literary fiction novel about an American living in Kyoto in the late 70s.

Reading another Dave Robicheaux book and this sentence took me out. There's fun crime fiction, and then there's deeply affecting and meaningful crime fiction.

Finished the new Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Pretty solid but I may have become somewhat allergic to magical realism in my old age. Decades of exposure to nothing but fantastic fiction may have used up all my tolerance for the impossible.

watched the fantastic Miami Vice episode "Made for Each Other" tonight. Great example of a network TV action drama having the guts to do action comedy. This ep is one of the best buddy cop films of the '80s.

Been devouring '80s and '90s crime bestsellers all summer. Currently enjoying the first Lucas Davenport novel.

found a killer hat this week. was totally destroyed and wildly overpriced. really wanted the patch off it.

Watched Robert Wise's THE SET-UP (1949) this morning. Phenomenal shit. Incredible pulp filmmaking.
