Alastor does like having friends, but he doesn't WANT to have them. In his eyes, having someone you care about makes you weak. But he HAS gotten close to people without realising. And whenever he realises, he pushes those people away without a second thought because he refuses to be weak.

He was ABSOLUTELY Vox's friend. You cannot tell me those two didn't constantly hang out at bars and enjoy each others company. Alastor simply didn't realise he had gotten that close. And the minute Vox insinuated they were close, the illusion broke. And Alastor pushed him as far away as possible.

THAT'S also a big reason why he was so pissed off at the start of Season 2. He's mad that he LET himself get too close to people at the hotel. Close enough that he was willing to fight a war for them. His near death experience made him realise he considered them friends. And that wouldn't do!

There were other layers to his frustration. Humiliation at a battle lost. A wound that won't heal. A staff he can't repair that hinders his power. But the entire reason he was irritable, neglecting his duties, and being more of a dick to everyone was because he realised they were his friends.
