I’ve started wearing a hat at work most days because I like hats. Particularly backwards baseball hats. The students have no opinion on this but man are my co-workers in other colleges and department confused by this. You can be an academic and not wear a blazer. It’s ok friends.

For me, the real humbling bit of this was: you HAVE to keep a regularly updated list of every student who goes on a lab field trip or spends a semester cleaning glassware, otherwise you absolutely will not be able to remember them all at Tenure Time

Gordon Conference on CO2 assimilation continues to be an amazing meeting. My life/research has taken a pretty hard turn from pure photosynthetic research but it’s nice to know I can always go back “home” and have folks to talk with. Now time for naps.

At the CO2 Assimilation Gordon Conference this week. When I get in the weeds about CO2 assimilation when teaching I often reference things that “you might not care but me and my 5 friends care about deeply”. Looking forward to chatting with other Rubisco nerds.

This semester I am teaching a dream class, a seminar course on the Buffalo National River that will conclude with a 3 day camping trip on the Buffalo River. I’m doing this with folks from 3 other universities and there will also be river management professionals on the trip 🧵

Some advice a received, accepted, and in retrospect wasn’t good advice was treat your pre-tenure years like a postdoc. For me this meant, doing a lot of different projects and getting involved in collaborative networks. (1/2)

King of the Hill was the BEST preparation I could have had before moving to Texas for grad school and the 9 years I ended up living there. I loved KotH before I lived there but now? It’s my all time favorite.

Well it’s been a wild semester/year. Most of my lab graduated last week and are off to bigger and better things. Vicky Stallings (first photo, blonde hair with two graduation medals) won the Senior of Distinction award for most outstanding senior graduating in 2023-2024! Oh and I got tenure.

I love that the abstract process for lightning talks at #botany2024 involves no abstracts.

I just found out that April is next Monday and that I should probably get on those @botsocamerica.bsky.social Botany abstracts. So for anyone else who thinks it’s still January, those abstracts are due soon.

FWIW, now that this semester is over I can say that this was the first semester of my adult life that I was sober for its entirety. That’s neat.

I have a fantastic research student who is duel majoring in psych and freshwater sciences. They’re interested in grad school for psychology of climate change type stuff. Does anyone have any ideas of where they should be looking for grad programs? I get lost fast when looking outside of bio!

Herbarium folks, anyone have issues with a glue in the bottle getting moldy? The glue is from herbarium supplies. This same glue also seems to be changing the colors of the leaves when dried.

She is STUNNING. I want one for our herbarium badly.

Last week I along with some other faculty took 20 students up to Picher, OK, a modern ghost town due to the environmental affects of zinc mining. It was an interesting and sobering field trip.

Today is mounting herbarium specimens day in Field Botany. Or as I like to call it “plant arts and crafts day”
