Last month, the Court of Appeals of Georgia affirmed a lower court’s October ruling that local election officials have a legal duty to certify results—even if they personally disagree with the outcome.

The Supreme Court has temporarily paused a lower-court ruling that would have stripped private citizens and civil rights groups in seven states from suing under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

Since its passing in 2002, the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) has distributed billions of dollars to states to secure elections through security trainings, modernizing voting equipment, increased cybersecurity measures, and more.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would require additional proof of citizenship when registering to vote, like a passport or certified copy of a birth certificate, which voting rights groups warn would disenfranchise millions of voters.

In April, the House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. If passed in the Senate and approved by the president, the bill would require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration.
