Progress is difficult. It requires common agreement on what progress is, and the ability to envision it without fear of the unknown. Nostalgia is an easy con. It’s a lie, but an effective emotional one. The lie of a past that never existed, and can never be regained, but the lie comforts. Some.

I think our current reality is cyberpunk. Techno-powered loneliness. A president that’s the villain from THE RUNNING MAN. Social media making us anti-social. Digital currencies. Technocracy controlling government. Invasive AI. We’re here. Just no giant holos of Ana De Armas. Not yet.

Yup. Because we have far more content given to us from celebrities on social media than we can consume, we see them all the time in media, so it’s less compelling to go to see a movie simply from interest in the star. Just go to IG. Watch a story. Done. We’re staying home.

Jeff makes a great point here. You cast “stars” for two reasons, really. 1. You love what their specific talent can bring to your project. 2. Their celebrity is a backstop against your movie not drawing an audience. Bankability. The problem is…

I would work on the BLADE film, were Marvel to ask, but I imagine I might be to “horror” for what they need. My Blade screenplay would be pretty intense.

It’s kinda cool to start over with a social media platform. Maybe they all get stale after a certain amount of time. I’m still dubious of the net positive of social media, but it’s woven into our culture.

I can’t share much of my film ARCHANGEL…yet…but here’s actor Conor Leslie (TITANS, MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE) doing a full cast (sfx by Dan Rebert) for the film. I nerded out. Made me feel like John Carpenter, hahaha.

Guillermo is a wizard. He’s making the perfect Guillermo project with the pitch perfect cast to do it. It’s really inspiring how he cuts through it all and finds the amazing.
