Watched John Woo’s “Hard Boiled” It’s crazy how fun that movie is. Woo really is a master at directing the coolest gun fights ever put to film. Plot was pretty standard stuff, acting was solid, but the action? Amazing. Well-shot action really elevates a movie’s potential

Watched a mid 00s South Korean action flick called The City of Violence, directed by Ryoo Seung-wan. It was aight. Story was meh and the acting was at the very least serviceable. But I was there for the martial arts and that’s what I got. Last extensive fight scene was amazing so I’m pretty content

The movie was “The Conversation” starring Gene Hackman. Felt very ahead of its time. It’s all about surveillance and the evolving tech wrapped up in a sort of tragic thriller. Hackman was incredible. Really carried every scene he was in. It was yet another of Coppola’s brilliant films

Watched Wong Kar-wai’s Days of Being Wild I wasn’t unimpressed with it, but I wasn’t as blown away as I expected to be, I think. It was good, very dream-like at times, which aided the feeling of hopelessness that prevails through most of the film. Its message was pretty clear, I just wanted *more*

Finished Ikiru today, directed by, predictably, Kurosawa Its different than many of his other movies, but not in a negative way. Very sad, very touching, very real and the lead actor delivers an amazing performance. Im divided on how long the last 3rd of the film went on for but it was still great

Spent the entire weekend fixing my computer instead of writing, but I started the sequel to The Queen and The Cock today, and I wrote nearly 5k words

In between fixing my PC, I watched Frank Perry’s “The Swimmer” What a bizarre, unique, and ultimately melancholic film. Burt Lancaster kills it as the lead. It has the kind of plot that seems nonsensical initially, but then slowly unravels into something more - that’s when the symbolism does too

At the point where if I haven’t fixed it, it’s more than likely a hardware failure issue

Watched Le Samourai directed by Jean-Pierre Melville Its crazy how a film so unassuming, so simple is one of the most influential ever made. But I get it. Everything comes together in this fitting way that it feels, narratively, without flaw. The acting compliments this simplicity wonderfully

I know people have mentioned (here and elsewhere) that I should make a Letterboxd but I am against it I’m too much of an obsessive. The reason I don’t watch anime much anymore is cause my fixation with cataloguing everything on MAL/Anilist ruined it for me. Don’t want that to happen with movies too

Watched Masaki Kobayashi’s “Harakiri” today since I took the day off from writing. Amazing story. Majority is told in a “retrospective” manner but it’s so gripping. The lead actor, Tatsuya Nakadai, has a commanding screen presence. A very compelling revenge tale mixed with tragedy

Watched Pat Garret and Billy the Kid, directed by Sam Peckinpah - first film of his I’ve ever watched. I do love me a western. This one was very romanticized and the ending was quite poignant. Coburn and Kristofferson were both powerhouses in it, but why the fuck was Bob Dylan in the movie

Maybe I’ll pick Supernatural back up after taking a break from it last year. I got a good 8-9 seasons in, and I remember it pretty well. Might return to it as my “show to watch with breakfast”

The movie was “High and Low” Interesting film. It feels disjointed, in a way, but it isn’t really. More of a three part story with what feels like “harder” cuts between the parts. Difficult to explain. It was a good movie for sure, but I can’t say it’s my favorite Kurosawa.

Through all my movie watching, I’ve also started and finished the show Fringe. Good show imo. Takes a bit to really find itself - starts out as a post-9/11 X-Files rip-off. But as the mythology and characters develop, it really comes into its own. Incredibly satisfying ending, too.

I was looking for something to watch next, and I wanted to branch out, but then I was made aware of another Kurosawa movie starring Toshiro Mifune and I guess my decision has been made for me.

Just finished the only film Charles Laughton ever directed, The Night Of The Hunter. Fascinating film. Robert Mitchum plays such a perfect psychopath. The score was incredible. Some weirdness in the story telling here and there, but I chalk it up to the time period it’s from. Great movie though

Watched Walter Hill’s “The Driver” It was solidly ok. Bruce Dern was great but Ryan O’Neal couldn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag. Ending fell a bit flat imo. The cinematography and camerawork with the couple of car-chase scenes were phenomenal, however. Really magnificent visuals in general

Holy shit William Friedkin’s “Sorcerer” is a god damn good film. The latter half of it might be some of the most tense cinema I’ve ever watched.

Watched “The Vanishing” (the original one) directed by George Sluizer and god damn. What a fascinating film Incredibly dark, but presented in a manner that doesn’t feel dark, it even comes off as a bit silly at times. But it never feels like a comedy either - just a masterful psychological thriller
