otoh the more freedom you have in a medium the clearer you have to be about your vision of what you want to do with it. i think we can all pretty much agree on what we *don't* want, which is "the hellsite." but what do you *want*? what's the positive vision? this is a *necessity*

@visakanv.com talks a lot about people and groups being bottlenecked on lack of imagination. you can literally type whatever you want into these little boxes. the field of play is ludicrously large. there is so much room here for so many different kinds of conversation and activity

pissing people off via text is the easiest game in the world, there are a million ways to do it. but if you've ever tasted what it's like to actually help people via text instead it doesn't compare at all. helping people is much harder but much much more fulfilling

imo one of the main mechanisms by which twitter became a hellsite is that having to communicate mostly through text makes it sometimes extremely hard to tell if someone is being sincere when they express a positive emotion. normally we use tone of voice, body language, etc. to evaluate that irl
