As a history teacher, July 4th always reminds me that the "more perfect union" is still unfinished work. But looking back reminds us how fragile it always was. In 1779 NYC, Patriots weren't celebrating. They were surviving a silent plot to collapse the rebellion with millions in counterfeit cash.
