This anime summer season is already looking really promising. I wrote some first impressions for a couple of the standouts. Might turn this thread into a microblog of some of the others I didn't have time to write for. First is my slightly more nuanced take on the new GitS.

Fundamentally I think if you're not treating the current GitS as a holy shit 2(3) cakes situation, you are not a homie. I love what Science Saru is doing but let's not pretend Stand Alone Complex did not basically set an unsurpassable bar for tv anime back in 2002.

Surprising nobody, the new ghost in the shell is killer. Love the new(old) take on the setting, Science Saru have gone above and beyond with this one.

Goes without saying but I'm of course very excited for Edgerunners 2. As someone whose been behind Trigger since day 1, it's been really fun watching Kai Ikarashi develop as an artist. He might be the most ascendant of Trigger's new generation and I really can't wait to see what he does.

Tried out Marathon. It's quite fun! The two times I successfully jumped a dude and stole their shit was thrilling. It's also quite miserable solo. I can appreciate what they're trying to do here and I actually like quite a bit of it, especially the vibes, but it's an intensely stressful game.

My one gundam hot take for the day is if I must pick one overly greebled AAA style gundam design, I like the Gundam Helix more than the EX. AU setting helps justify the departure and while I really don't like how detailed it is, the silhouette and proportions work for me better.

Finally got home and after sitting with it, I think I (mostly) like it. I think the movie has a lot of problems structurally, but it's so thematically resonant, especially toward the end, that it's hard not to fall under its spell. Scattered thoughts in the replies, proper review to come later.
