Bi-annual serious post, ‘cos I see a lot of pain on here. If the world is grinding you down, you gotta shift your focus to what you can be grateful for. Take a moment to appreciate every good thing in your life, no matter how small. Don’t let the ugliness you see on your phone take root inside you.

I’m not that interested in international football, but I’m bang up for Bielsa at Wembley v England.

That’s City, Chelsea and Liverpool they’ve slapped about to varying degrees in a week. 4 points out of those 9 is unreal. Elland Road sucked that last goal in to the net.

Slot has identified how you make space when we play like this. Miles better than the brainless approach from Chelsea.

Kit clash at Villa v Arsenal is painful again. They’re supposed to have software that prevents this stuff. But perhaps it’s not quite as powerful as the requirements of, say, Adidas 🙄

Scores of virgins in Africa are signing oaths in blood pledging to post mean emojis when Leeds next lose. Their support is so unhinged. I love it. Chelsea and Leeds famously had no rivalry prior to Wednesday night, of course. I don’t think there was even football before iPhone 6 was there?

I worked in radio for 15 years. Nobody enters the competitions cos they think there’s no chance. If it’s a cool prize, call up and act all cheery and “fun”. Give the presenter some nice audio to play to his boss. 90% strike rate guaranteed.

Another you might have missed if you’re not on X - Ao Tanaka’s primary school teacher travelled from Japan to Elland Road and saw him score last night.

Was out playing football with my boy and some random kids again. I usually go in goal because I’m a lunatic and it’s exhilarating. Of course like all middle aged men who do this, I keep convincing myself I could’ve had a career in the game if only I’d tried harder. 💀

Like a lot of people in the mid 40s-50s bracket, this is my first memory of a computer. The sheer volume of talent that came out of our generation suggests it was a rare Conservative W to get them in every school.

“But what do you THINK of today’s game here on BBC Sounds or wherever you get your podcasts? Do you agree with guest type A who thinks saying the opposite of the truth is a skill? Or maybe you’re nodding along to guest B, who’s only here for the appearance fee? Here’s some badly distorted music.”

Over the last 7 weeks I’ve cut down my news consumption to what I’d consider pre internet levels. I think the positive effect on my soul is up there with being sober for five years. You gotta sort that shit out, friends - it’s utter poison.

"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."

Equally encouraged and annoyed with that. I wonder if Farke will takes any lessons lessons from it? Probably. For two games. Anyway, cracking second half. Citeh did not like it!

My kid is still very much up for watching the game today. I’d honestly be happy very far from a TV for a few hours, something I can’t really remember thinking on a match day before.

I remember arriving in the UAE for the first time in National Day week of 2008. Bit tired, bit fed up with life, hopeful of a break. And here I am in National Day week 17 years later (surprising) watching both of my kids in their school performance (more surprising). It’s been a ride and then some.

Every year at our kid’s school we meet more new families who’ve left the UK because they couldn’t make it work anymore. They’re not the rich. They’re the “ordinary people” being taken advantage of again here. The UK is gonna become one of those countries everyone leave when they’re young.
