Why are they on the news talking about what they are going to name features on the far side of the moon? One science journalist said the emotional story about one of the names made her cry? So we can just name things without IAU?

This weeks Round Up is slightly shorter (2 papers instead of 3!) due to the blog post about the April Fools papers. Though, it was not a particularly atmosphere heavy week.

Trump needs to drop the facade and admit defeat so we can get on with life, he said he is the president who ends wars, so he can end it by admitting defeat, very simple!

If you want to prioritise “early career” researchers then let post docs apply to your funding awards! Not people who already have permanent jobs! That’s not early career!

I’m in a hotel in Bristol and it’s the dream. I’ve got the heating on. Something I can’t do in my flat in Oxford. Also, the shower is hot for more than 1 minute! Luxury!

Less than one week after this post, the theoretical particle physics grants have been ruthlessly cut. PDRA positions are down by ~70% compared to the last funding cycle. Some groups cannot even hire postdocs for the next 4 years. This is on top of an effective 100% hiring cut for October 2026.

Buzzing for the world indoors 800m finals tomorrow. Both the womens and the mens are going to be a great watch. We've got Hodgkinson and Werro battling for the womens and Lutkenhaus (the 17 year old!) with a great chance of winning for the mens.

Looking at the AAS jobregister lately, it seemed to me that there are less positions available in all categories than in previous years. Wanting to quantify, I used the wayback machine to check on the number of postings in the January-March window and it is quite depressing.

Happy birthday to me! And what an amazing birthday present, 112 hours of JWST time to observe the emission spectra of 9 hot Jupiters! Looking back at previously awarded programs, I think this might be the largest number of hours awarded to a UK PI to study exoplanet atmospheres!
