I'm very excited to be able to share Yayaati Chachan's Hubble/WFC3 transit spectrum of ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-20b. Using *all* of WFC3's grisms, we get a 0.2-1.7 micron spectrum showing absorption by metals at in the UV and only weak absorption by water in the IR. 🔭🪐

Yes, high spectral resolution in space is surely the future for exoplanets. It doesn't even need to be that "high" res, JWST's R=2,700 is delivering great science, just think what could be done with a R=3,000-5,000 integral field spectrograph behind a coronagraph on HWO 🤯

Taught the next door neighbors kids about eclipses and they loved looking through the glasses! They were so excited ☀️😁 Space is the best!

Ahhh the partial eclipse has begun 🤩 bouncing around in the garden like an excited puppy. I’m using solar eclipse glasses from the 2015 UK partial solar eclipse which occurred the day after I handed in my PhD thesis and I hosted a 3hour live radio show with 2000 people. There is so much joy there ☀️

Well fuck! This is not something where others can pick up the slack. Yeah sure there is opportunity for places like the UK to welcome talent and innovation in space and they want to but there is just not the same money and infrastructure. This is a blow to global science!

My teaching ended a few weeks ago so it is time to go on tour! Was in Cambridge and Oxford last week & heading to Southampton today to tell people all about our WASP-17b JWST program & how to realize a 3D planet from the data!
