Exaltation. Powerful Aetheri mages can ascend to godhood purely through mastery of magic, using it to transcend the limits of the flesh and find themselves a place in Heaven. If they succeed, they become a god. But it's not an easy process. And it can have consequences

Catch up time! And starting with one that made me chuckle because... this was a hard one to answer because my 'Yes' is empathic enough that doing this in anything other than exhaustive depth was going to be painful.

Mortals have the regular ol jury trial structure. No need for the ghosts to meddle in that. The ghosts are debating this point. They don't have a firm system of laws or control just yet, but as their numbers grow, this is something they're weighing up 1/4 🧵

Still the Home Office. That said, the Department of High Technology has a few 'unorthodox' levers to apply some extra pressure to 'subversive elements', if they feel its warranted.

Still the houses of parliament. The ghosts have their House of Shades, but that's more a forum for a workforce to air their grievances and the bosses to try and sell them on what they're doing. Law is still a thing for mortals and their MPs. The ghosts have all they need.

This is something that the leads have some reason to worry about. Once they figure out the dimensional sealing thing, there's no way to be sure what the wider world would be like if they brought Britain back to the material plane. They could be heading back to a ruined world

Origin of this world, in this case would be the point of timeline divergence with our reality. And it's somewhat known, just not a lot of the specifics (and secrets) made it to the public eye. 1/6 🧵

There's a few options. Architects abusing their power to drain life from the poor wards. Thaumologists experimenting and contaminating an area. But one issue is widespread and cultural. Athamatic. Linguistic root of Aetherian League and later, in space, Aetheri. 1/7 🧵

Fascinating question for the ghost world. ^^ The truth is open for interpretation, there's some scientific evidence to say Ghosts Aren't Really The Souls Of The Dead, but you can't rule the idea out. 1/8 🧵

There's a few different interpretations of mastery among the Aetheri, mostly split between the classical, the tradespeak and the religious. None of them are wrong, but it can lead to some social awkwardness when different groups discuss the matter. 🧵/8

Magic is a skill set. Even a very well trained mage doesn't have infinite options. That's where the individual orders and their traditions come in; every magical framework is different, and can't be intertwined. 1/4

Ooooh, I get to do question with a question for this one! Kinda jerkish, but it's an important point for this concept of mine If choices are deliberately withheld, or you are misdirected away from them, does your free will still functionally exist? 1/4 🧵

Varies by tradition is a copout, but unfortunately accurate. Hell, varies by individual. The magic circuits are used, and that creates an overall lean towards movement, but the Aetheri are fairly diverse on this point.

The Aetheri don't need tools to work magic; the Magic Circuit is biological and innate. That said, other species wanting to work magic are going to need to develop some kind of alternative, which will lead to tool based magic. What could that look like? 🧵/5

A Carnacki ghost's Otherworld theoretically only has one way in. The ghost pulling you in directly. A wild ghost's Otherworld is based on a physical location, and could be entered from the spot it's mirroring, but the 'digital' Otherworld removes that possibility 🧵/4

Oh, so many. The Ghost AI technology relies on making use of non physical realms, due to the metaphysical mechanics of how ghosts work couples with the tech. The result is that there are *hundreds* of pocket dimensions in play. 🧵

The Empyrean is the source of magic, a field of energy that spans the cosmos. But how exactly it works isn't entirely understood in story. Characters basically know, but there's stuff that doesn't entirely fit 🧵/4

I badly want to do a scene where my main antagonist, a magic transit cop, chases the protagonists and their train through the subway at the head of a 'wing' of troops, all riding their blades like surfboards, and him ploughing through everything on an enormous buster sword. ^^

Indeed! The 'Shadow' in this world comes from Britain throwing itself into an endless underworld esque 'nethersea' of sunless waves and half-formed souls, in a desperate attempt to isolate itself from the international community. ...

Notably, wild flora and fauna has shifted. Few folk are going to spot it, but if you venture out you've got a shot at finding vibrant new flower colours, herbs with a stronger scent than they 'should'. It's largely seen as a myth, but it draws the curious out of the city

I'm backworking from the premise of The Breakman. A colony world torn between magical and SF great powers. I need both diverse magic types, to best avoid Planet of Hats and a reason for Mages to explore space. The Empyrean provides both.

Anyone can affect the Empyrean; it's a web of life, feeling and thought so all life feeds back into it and can feel it in turn. There's two levels of escalation. The 'magic people', who I have currently dubbed the Aetheri, and the outright mages in their ranks. 1/10 🧵

"But this is not the country, my friend. This is a desert!" ^^ It's pleasant to look at, but urbanization has left the countryside largely abandoned and personal travel rarer due to limited fuel options and few car parts. It's a desert in effect if not in name.

Mmm... there aren't any Sudden New British Mountains to get into. But interestingly, there's been a drop in tourism. People can feel something off when walking towards the heights. There's even a few cryptid reports; strange figures in white, hulking monsters, The Red Lady...

This is something I try to minimize. Indie TTRPGs have taught me to be judicious with proper nouns and terminology; they're an easy way to distance a reader. That said, a complete lack of them isn't credible and there's a few in The Breakman 1/5 🧵

Most people would say there isn't one. I'm nervous about deliberately omitting a central axis for magic, but it's an intentional choice rather than an oversight, and I have a kinda hidden semi-concept in my back pocket to provide some internal unity 1/8 🧵

I'd say the Breakman falls under Hard Magic primarily. The Empyrean, the field that mages draw upon, is an observable phenomena with consistent laws. The act of creating a new school of magic is setting your own laws and framework for the Empyrean 🧵1/4
