If you're a D.C. Library user, be aware: The D.C. Public Library system says it is likely going to have to reduce opening hours at neighborhood branches, from the current 61 hours a week to 40 hours. Branches would also go from being open seven days a week to five days.

The NEH has been a singular force for bringing people together. In this moment of hate, fear and isolation, the NEH helped us learn about our past and about each other. Today we are losing almost all of the NEH public servants. We are all in their debt. A national shame. A profound cultural loss.

this is a massive loss. so many historians rely heavily on this database for research, teaching, everything. they say "do your own research" but they don't mean it.

As a scholar, as a teacher, and now as a museum educator, Chronicling America has been invaluable. Beyond that, though, it's OURS. We paid for it. It's a public good.

I cannot begin to express how invaluable the National Digital Newspaper Program & ChronAm are to my work as a researcher, instructor, and librarian. The NDNP team at NEH & LC is (was?) such a force for good--it is cruel that the public is robbed of the team's plans for the program's future.

ACH has updated our Impact Database with info about canceled NEH grants as of 4/8/25. We understand around 40 grants remain active, with a small number reinstated. The $ amounts reflect awarded funds. The total amount is a fraction (~.000037%)of the 2024 US budget. Learn more: impact.ach.org

the loss of @neh-odh.bsky.social @nehgov.bsky.social and IMLS will undoubtedly impact humanities and digital humanities research and teaching for decades to come. Worse is the separation of the incredible staffs at those agencies who have decades of stewardship and leadership in cultural heritage.

Today, approx. 135 of the 185 total NEH staffers woke up to the news that their positions were being RIFed. Then, almost all current grantees received emails cancelling their grants. I posted this on Fb, mostly for non-academics, but here's a bit about the impact of the 3 grants the NEH gave me: 1/

The Michigan Humanities Council lost 90% of its operating budget overnight. Every NEH grant and fellowship in my college has been terminated (including my own). And as devastated as I am by that, the treatment that the amazing NEH employees are receiving is so much worse. They do not deserve this.

They did it. They terminated my NEH grant. Their letter went to my junk mail. This is an active grant that would have finished on June 30. “Your grant’s immediate termination is necessary to safeguard the interests of the federal government” They are so afraid of us.

The NEH staff is the most thoughtful group of people I've ever worked with. With their small budget they have done so much. Thank you NEH, incl @neh-odh.bsky.social. @ach.bsky.social

I just got confirmation that National History Day, a program that does more to ignite K-12 students' love of history, learning, and yes, even the United States than anything else I've ever seen, had all its funding cut yesterday by the DOGE-axe at the NEH - including for this year's ongoing contest.

Among the thousands of groups affected by the sudden cessation of funds are state arts councils, museums, historic sites, archives, libraries, educators and media outlets in all 50 states.

Congress has the power to restore funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Join me in calling your reps!
