MFRI hosted recently a course on sampling and identifying chironomid pupal skins (insects). As 20 freshwater scientists sat for 4 days learning how to identify chironomid pupal skins, they found 20 new species that had not been documented in Iceland before. More: www.hafogvatn.is/en/about/new...

The preliminary results of the measurements indicate a slightly lower estimate of the fishable biomass than in the week before. MFRI, along with a consortium of 22 parties under the leadership of the Icelandic Environment Agency, has received a 3.5 billion ISK grant from the EU for the LIFE ICEWATER project which aims is to strengthen the implementation of the water framework directive in Iceland. More on MFRI.is

Scientists at MFRI have successfully reared capelin from hatch to adulthood in a laboratory for the first time. Using intensive aquaculture methods, the capelin showed a remarkably steady growth and reached maturity one year after hatching. See more on mfri.is #capelinresearch #aquacultureresearch

A new article published in Journal of Fish Biology reveals that two lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus), tagged east of Iceland, migrated up to 1612 km to Denmark to spawn. It was not known that #lumpfish would migrate such extensive distances. More information on MFRI´s webstite in comments.
