This is incredible. Over 500 sociologists & counting have committed to BOYCOTTING the annual American Sociological Association meeting if BDS is not put back on the ballot. We reject the Palestine exception! Let the people vote!

If you reject the authoritarian moves of the current ASA (sociology) leadership and want to preserve democratic governance for the organization’s members, please join this boycott campaign. Another ASA is possible.

I am organizing the theory roundtables for the upcoming conference. I will, however, withdraw my submitted work, and will boycott the event if leadership fails to respond to being democratic. Members have a right to choose our future as sociologists and what we stand for.

I'd like to be at ASA in NYC this August. I've helped organize a few panels and am on an awards committee. However, if the ASA leadership does not allow the resolution to be considered through the existing procedures, I am more than happy to boycott the meeting.

professional orgs continuing their bs, performing their duty as consent-manufacturers of empire. this is a structural problem, as Prof. Romero outlines. so many continue to tell each other that the fighting from within is honorable when it just lends legitimacy for orgs that needs to be dismantled

We learned in 2024, when the late great Michael Burawoy led a President's Letter in support of the ceasefire resolution, that most ASA presidents are anti-genocide. Mary Romero (2019) announced she'll boycott the ASA meeting in reaction to the decision to refuse to put BDS on the ballot.

Finally. Leqaa is freed after a year of ICE detention. We do not forget the complicity of our academic institutions in repressing pro Palestine voices, setting the stage for her detention & those of other students across the country. No one is free until Palestine is free.

I'm intrigued by, "many members left ASA" after the 2024 resolution. Can't find the trends on the website anymore, but it was about 10,500 in 2021 and falling fast. Now they say it is 9412, which looks better than the trend...

spineless & unprofessional stance by @asanews.bsky.social. There was a vote last year on a genocide statement & now the ASA is trying to delegitimate it. Reminds me of other so-called leaders trying to delegitimate elections & rewrite history.

Sanjiv Gupta questions the science behind ASA's assertions, asking how they are getting causation from correlation & how the results from the resolution condemning genocide match up to other results of prior resolutions - he hasn't received a response.

Caitlin Schroering writes "it is unacceptable to deny ASA members ... a vote on the question of a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. I support this petition because ... Israel is engaged in apartheid, occupation, and genocide against the Palestinian people, including scholasticide."

In his response to ASA's undemocratic decision @motorres.bsky.social writes "The past few years have illuminated a great deal to me: whose voices matter in society and whose can be marginalized... Please understand: this move ... is ... why so many of us feel ... disconnected from the organization."

When you want to prevent Palestinian solidarity it helps to have friends in high places…

Profoundly angered by letter that the @asanews.bsky.social President and Executive Director sent to the membership. To blame colleagues for membership decline and shut down democratic processes on matters of genocide in times of authoritarian expansion is astonishing.
