Found this cracking Red breasted flycatcher at winterton this afternoon, initially very sluggish & napping, then became much more sprightly, even feeding on the floor a few metres away oblivious to my presence. Also 5 redstarts, winterton/horsey, song thrushes, robins & goldcrests. #norfolkbirding

Met up with long-standing friends who are visiting Suffolk this morning for a catch up. Birding was varied and productive. Super close Manx Shearwater and confiding Firecrest at Thorpeness were the highlights, the latter my first of the autumn, as was a Rock Pipit at Slaughden.

A splendid after school visit to Felixstowe Ferry with @joshuapev.bsky.social. Two juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, 130 Golden Plovers, 80 Avocets, 2 Sandwich Terns etc all on one pool. Then Guillemot and Brent Geese offshore during a short seawatch.

I really enjoyed #Migfest 2025. A chance to catch up with lots of long-standing friends & make new ones. A memorable walk to the Point on Sat. A loop via Beacon Ponds on Sun ending with a dash to see the Red-necked Phalarope. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the weekend such a success.

Migfest 2025 was really fun! Red-necked Phalarope (lifer!), Cranes, Curlew Sandpipers, Garganey, Pink feet, Osprey, Arctic Skua, Tree Pipit, Redstarts, Crossbill and 000s of Meadow Pipit the highlights! Was fantastic to have such amazing company as well! Sorry don't have enough space to tag people.

Looking forward to #Migfest tomorrow. Headed up early to allow an extra day’s birding. Found a confiding Dipper on the edge of the N York Moors before enjoying a magical time with the Gannets at Bempton. Hornsea Mere was very birdy: 3 Black Terns, Little Gull, 3 Little Stints, 2 Curlew Sandpipers.

One of the @ldvnnr.bsky.social reintroduced Corncrakes has pinged our MOTUS Tower! On 24th August at 21:32 it was picked up migrating over Spurn for 6 minutes! Amazingly, the same bird was detected just 90 minutes later at Weybourne, Norfolk! More info here www.facebook.com/share/p/1Arw...

This week I’ve continued to enjoy visiting @landguardbo.bsky.social at least once every day. The highlight was seeing a Short-eared Owl with @joshuapev.bsky.social on Sunday, a magic moment! Y’day’s Spotted Flycatcher was showy. Today I finally saw the Hoopoe, from the approach road to the reserve.

An awesome morning up the coast today. The Hen Harrier at Benacre was surreal! A close Manx Shearwater off Southwold was a bonus before the monsoon arrived.

Benacre Broad has been very good recently and this morning, as well as 19 species of wader, @david-walsh.bsky.social picked up a 2cy male Hen Harrier that eventually flew over our heads. Missing an inner 'finger' #ukbirding #suffolkbirding

On Saturday, I headed to Rainham Marshes with Ben Rumsby, @ravigrewal.bsky.social, Daniel Brasier, and Fred Matthews. Was brilliant to see a Roseate Tern on the river (credit to Fred for picking it up)! Very distant but a great bird! Also 4 Wood Sands, Whinchat, Tree Pipit, Barn Owl etc

Headed to Felixstowe Ferry with @joshuapev.bsky.social this am. A 45 minute seawatch was quiet but delivered our target, Gannet, albeit just one. 150 roosting Golden Plovers were lovely, before this juvenile Caspian Gull flew in to the jetty, a ‘classic cach’ per @cach22.bsky.social who should know!

Y’day was my best morning at Landguard so far this autumn, with Pied Flycatcher, Common & Black Redstarts, Whinchat plus a bonus Tree Sparrow (first spotted by @joshuapev.bsky.social). I’ve been back through all my notebooks since 2000; I believe this is my first on the Suffolk coast this century!

On my first visit to Easton Bavents for a while a juv/1cy Red-backed Shrike was a nice find and a good way to bring up 200 species on my patch for the year. Always a little distant for photos...

A nice final walk around the Nevern Estuary this morning. Found this Wood Warbler, which was quite a surprise! Also the German ringed juvenile female Osprey still showing well, Blackwit, 10 Ringo, 30 Dunlins, Kingfisher, Red Kite 3 Med Gulls, Willow Warbler and more! #ukbirding

Not many new birds in at Landguard but 2 Whinchats were nice as was a Clifden nonpareil that was resting on our Ringer Wardens trousers that were hanging out to dry

A solo visit to @landguardbo.bsky.social today. Super view of a Pied Flycatcher (my fifth, previous four in the hand or glimpsed!), two confiding Black Redstarts, etc. Instead of heading home, diverted to Shingle Street where it was great to hear the Greenish Warbler sub singing as well as calling.

Spent today birding with @robinburrough.bsky.social, for the first time in ages. We saw the adult Zitting Cisticolas at Walberswick plus a Ruddy Shelduck. Then to Kessingland where, after a long search, we were thrilled to have great views of the Barred Warbler (thanks Stuart Reeves & Chris Darby).

Another fun morning at @landguardbo.bsky.social with @joshuapev.bsky.social. Lots of common migrant warblers, plus Whinchat, 4 Wheatears, Yellow Wagtail and a Guillemot offshore. The celebrity Purple Sandpiper continues to show rather well!

Lots going on currently, so my morning visits to @landguardbo.bsky.social are extra important! Today’s was brilliant. The eagle-eyed @joshuapev.bsky.social spotted two Whinchats and a summer plumage Red-throated Diver, and we enjoyed the Purple Sandpiper up close. The Clouded Yellow pic is from Fri.

An enjoyable hour or so with James Porter at Loompit Lake near Levington produced a couple of Lesser Emperors, one of which was surprisingly obliging! My first of the year. Also three summer plumage Grey Plovers on the Orwell.

I’ve enjoyed the last two mornings at @landguardbo.bsky.social catching up with @landguardbirder.bsky.social and @birderbill.bsky.social. Lots to see including Grayling (noteworthy), juv Black Redstart, Wasp Spider (photos), Pied Flycatcher (glimpsed), Willow Warblers … + a very pink container ship!

This Common Darter perched briefly on the viburnum in my garden yesterday, just my fourth record. A little earlier a male Banded Demoiselle had appeared, a first ever and major surprise, but too quick for the camera. Both whilst having a coffee with a university friend I hadn’t seen for ages!
