Carlos Bernier of Puerto Rico was born 99 year ago today. He usually doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his role in baseball’s integration, specifically with the Pirates. He had a long career in Puerto Rico (where he is a HOFer) and the minors, with at least 3,563 pro hits, 264 HR, and 896 SB.

I’m in Caguas, Puerto Rico and got to see where The Great One Roberto Clemente played when he was 18-19 years old. The Caguas Criollos staff was so friendly and even let me look at the field. Had to tip my hat! Retire 21!

Of the people in this world, I have to be one of the few that's more interested in buying pictures of long-decwased baseball owners instead of players.

I couldn’t track down the precise color setup of the 1891 Pittsburgh in the early April Chronicle-Telegraph yet, but I did find…. An ad for the restaurant owned by early 20th century film star Adolphe Menjou’s dad. (Dejected sigh)

Huck Geary was born #OTD in 1917 in #Buffalo. He played shortstop for the #Bisons in the mid-1930s. Also played in two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s the grandfather of President of Rich Baseball Operations Mike Buczkowski.

Was the team so named because people in the 1880s were crazy about plays involving pirates? Probably. Case in point, a New York World reference (via the 3/5/1891 Commercial Gazette) to Pirates of Penzance.

We generally know Connie Mack as an old stately gentleman, heading the Philadelphia A’s. But he was a young man once, which included a few years playing and managing in Pittsburg(h). Let’s take a look at Mr. Mack, avant 1900.

Not really my favorite, but it was close, and seemed to fit in with the account’s ethos.

Gotta figure it was Leon Day, right? Here he is mixed in with a number of contemporary luminaries, including some of the greatest Grays, and, generally, baseball players, to ever put on a uniform at the (I believe) 1946 East-West game.

Genuinely feels like a mistake, but what could go wrong? 30+ more years without a championship? I guess time will tell. And what do I know, I'm more of a hockey and baseball guy anyway?

It's the birthday anniversary (1859) of a @northsidenotch.com fave, Ed Swartwood. A beast during the first couple @pirates.com seasons (including the 'Brewery 9' squad), Swartwood was a local fixture after his baseball career ended, and is buried up the hill from PNC Park in Union Dale Cemetery.

So, last time the Bears beat the Packers in the playoffs way back in 1941, Rip Sewell was the reigning loss leader in the National League with 17. Not sure how many Eephus pitches he chucked up in 1941.

Every new year is a reminder of Clemente's generosity and regard for his fellow humans, the ones who suffered, the ones he would never know, not they, him, but whose lives he touched because that was who he was, a life-toucher, a game-changer, a man who didn't want to be a hero but was one anyway.

Saturday afternoon walk. Long forgotten, sites where Negro League teams once played still survive in Pittsburgh. Sciullo Memorial Park, nee Deans Field, sits just off the Bloomfield St. Bridge. And West Penn Park is a few blocks away in Polish Hill.
