It’s May 2nd, which means we celebrate the 1877 game where Pud Galvin threw a one-hitter and knocked out the eventual game-winning home run against Boston’s National League team (the team we now know as the @braves.com ). So if you’re willing and able, drink a toast to the Allegheny and Pud today.

The 1901 book ‘Notable Men of Pittsburgh’ includes two baseball magnates of the @pirates.com organization: late 1880s owner William Nimick, and longtime early 20th century owner Barney Dreyfuss.

A piece on Captain Price, who brought the Union Association team to the Allegheny shores even if only for a brief long weekend. Always nice to see his name in print, even though we haven’t verified a face to go with it yet.

My grandmother knew 10-year-old-me liked baseball. She had access to HBO and we didn’t. So she got a videocassette and recorded a selection of baseball movies to give to me. Anyway, I seem to remember the tape’s lineup being Pride of the Yankees, Pride of St. Louis, and…Major League.

🇵🇷 Carlos Bernier, the first Black player in Pittsburgh Pirates history, died 37 years ago today. Sadly, his death was self-inflicted, as he suffered from “financial insecurity and emotional problems” later in life. He is a Hall of Famer in his native Puerto Rico.
