Had a Clouded Yellow #butterfly on the outskirts of March. Possibly the first I've seen here and I can't recall having seen one in Cambridgeshire before 🤔. No picture, but here's some bluesky for bluesky 🤦

My highlight last night, amongst the numbers here in Fenland, was this Blackneck that flew out of the trap when I was counting its commoner cousins and then didn't cooperate very well after! #teammoth

Moth interest has been ticking along here in Fenland over the last few weeks, albeit with very little variety outside the usual suspects. However this Small Ranunculus looking dapper in the morning light #teammoth

There's been a light, but steady passage of Crossbill over the house (March) during the last few weeks. Mostly 1s and 2s, most mornings, but today saw the first group over. Is this localised movement, or reaching any further in Cambs/elsewhere? #cambsbirds

A few #moth highlights from recent trapping in my Fenland garden

A reeling Grasshopper Warbler last night, just west of the a141 in March, was a welcome patch tick. Flyover garden Crossbill just now too... autumn birding.. #cambsbirds

A busy moth trap this morning although I failed to get to it before the birds, ants, wasps and also a bumblebee buzzing about in there 🤦. 82:39 (minimum due to above 😅) with 3 NFG including this Four Spotted Footman 📸. Peppered Moth a nice NFY too #teammoth

A much better night last night for moths, despite hours of rain midway through. Scarce Silver- lines, Broad-barred White both NFG and an early Clancy's Rustic, guessing no longer an immigrant here due to regularity #teammoth

Undertaking #badger surveys for work, I'm often told "it must be lovely to see them all the time". Truth being I see a lot of evidence (💩) but rarely see them. Therefore this one before sunrise was a pleasant encounter

The view from my home 'office' window. Seven years ago this was pea gravel and lacking in anything living. I'm pleased now to look out and see #birds (most recently a goldcrest!) and #butterflies using this small urban space. Create the habitat and the wildlife will follow...

Two #moths last night in the trap, marked the start of the years recording here in vc29. However the highlight was this apparent Great Diving Beetle. No idea of it's status in Fenland, but an impressive beast! Happy to take any correction to the ID 😆

First moth of the year, a white-shouldered house moth, decided to join me in the living room to watch the football. Maybe I should think about sticking the trap out soon #teammoth

Lovely few hours around March and Manea (Cambs), looking for geese and,or, colour-ringed swans. Neither found, but stopped to look at two large gulls in a field (📷) and one was an adult Caspian - bonus! #ukbirding

Visiting family gave me an opportunity to catch some vitamin sea on Redcar beach. Lovely walk, with waders on the beach, gulls and eider offshore

An enjoyable year of garden #ukbirding, adding 2 new species (greenshank & hawfinch) with c1k pinkie over too as notable. First full year of #teammoth saw just under 300 species, inc a first for vc29 (silver barred Tortrix) and lots of other notables for north Cambs. Happy Xmas and 2025 to all

Little Auk at Grafham Water today. First seen off Mander car park before it drifted into Valley Creek and onto the shoreline, then it was sadly taken by a Red Kite. All over in about 20 mins from when I first saw it @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social #cambirds

Some pre-work bird ringing this morning (under licence), resulted in 4 Redwing and a handful of resident winter birds caught. Lovely morning to be out too

Glorious morning, allowing an hour of birding the Nene washes corridor, looking for big birds in fields. Plenty found but no target species. G W Egret sat in a ploughed field looked slightly out of place. #ukbirding

A morning birding around St Helier, Jersey produced an influx of Goldcrests and a Firecrest in Howard Davis Park. Offshore, a late (?) sandwich tern was nice #ukbirding

Surveying predominantly arable farmland, I often see the same species typical of the habitat, so a flyover rock pipit and knee-trembling views of an adult male Merlin this morning (inland Lincs) was very welcome #ukbirding

Following the first record last week, another flock of Pink-foot over this evening. Must be a (large) flock of birds somewhere nearby. Must check Ouse or Nene washes. Nice to hear anyway, I'm more used to Cranes and Whooper Swans over the garden! #cambirds, #ukbirding
