While translating "One Thousand and One Kisses," I found myself deep in euphemisms and literary sleuthing—merkez مركز, it turns out, is much more than just “center.”

A growing list of words and materials are being scrubbed from government websites and documents in an attempt by the Trump administration to remove all references not only to DEI, but also to climate change, vaccines, and a host of other topics. More:

İmamoğlu to be arrested after a 4-day detention amid mass protests and economic meltdown. Power-hungry Erdogan pushes Turkey into a dark new era where any pretence of democracy and rule of law has dissolved into thin air. What a tragedy for a country that could've had a very different trajectory.

In a blatant yet predictable move, Ekrem Imamoglu—Istanbul’s mayor and Erdogan’s main rival—has had his diploma voided. Turkish law requires the president to be a university graduate, making this a clear example of how skewed the electoral playing field is under Erdogan’s rule.

“Seviyye Talip”, the complicated and twisted tale of Ottoman modernization, is now available in English, translated by Iclal Vanwesenbeeck! Seviyye could arguably be one of the most fascinating and rebellious women in late Ottoman literature. Can’t wait to teach this one!
