Delays in delivering major IT projects result in contracts for existing systems being repeatedly extended well beyond their intended life – on average by about 8yrs. Across 5 projects which each experienced delays, contract extensions cost over £573m. Full report on our website

Our report looks at a portfolio of 29 major IT projects across NI government departments. The portfolio has a total estimated cost of £5.2bn – over 2/3 of the costs & nearly 1/2 the projects relate to the Department of Health & Department of Finance. Full report on our website

Major IT projects take close to 6.5yrs from design to implementation. We recommend planning to identify systems across the civil service that are coming to the end of their intended life, to ensure they are maintained or replaced well in advance of the current contract expiring

Ambulance handover times in Northern Ireland have worsened dramatically. In 2023-24, over 11,000 handovers took more than 3 hours, compared to around 400 in 2019-20. This impacts patient care and the ambulance service’s ability to respond to calls. Read the full report on our website
